Not what we’re looking for

Went on a tour a few weeks ago and although the garden and inside of the main living space was beautiful, they don’t offer what my loved one is needing. The young girl who gave the tour seemed lost and confused when talking and would give us different prices each time we asked her to repeat herself. She also had to call and ask what time our scheduled tour was. The company stresses that activities are the biggest part of the community but when we walked in we saw residents sitting around doing nothing and there wasn’t anything exciting on the activity calendar. We wish this place was suitable for our loved one as the building is right by our house.

The med techs are very sweet. There were no activities in the reminiscing area. The family feels like there were promises made during the tour and these weren't fulfilled after moving in. There were three meals a day served to the residents. The meals were always delivered cold, and my loved one never enjoyed eating them.

Improvement needed

My mom was only there for 3 months and in that time she was admitted to the hospital for a week, two times and also sent to a physical therapy facility for two weeks. The staff did not take notes on anything we told them. They also did not seem to be very knowledgeable about dementia patients. We moved our mom to a different facility after her second stay in the hospital. She is doing much better at the new facility.

Hard Time at Oakmont

I would not recommend Oakmont. It is such a clean, new and beautiful place. That's why people move in there, but the health department has a terrible communication problem and things have gone wrong constantly, since my loved ones moved in. I am in constant communication with the director, who is very friendly and helpful, but she had to take over some communication that was supposed to be done by the health team. The care staff is getting better, as they get to know my loved ones and what they need but I seem to have to tell them directly. I am there several days a week to make sure things are getting done. I have witnessed the maintenance team clean up sizable messes in the community and they do a great job and right away. Oakmont seems to have a turnover problem with staff. The food was good at first but not so great lately. The care team seems to be short also. I think the place would be okay if you didn't need as much care as my loved ones need.

Not good

My Mother has been resident at Ivy Park for approximately 5 years. I must say their change of ownership has not been for the better..less staff etc, etc. The latest escapade concerned the delivery of a new hospital bed for my mother. There was a mixup by the delivery person about the removal of the bed. Ivy park Was totally unhelpful and kept calling my family saying they were going to destroy the bed if it was not removed immediately . Not giving us a chance to contact the delivery company.. The phone calls finally stopped and we can get no information about the whereabouts of the bed despite repeatedly asking them. The bed was very expensive, and the staff refuses to give us information. Signed …..the very frustrated family

Caring staff, but falls short.

The staff is very caring and try to do the right thing for residents. The residents are very welcoming and friendly. However, they nickel and dime on services and don't live up to promises, e.g. we were told that cable was included in the rent, but after many weeks of trying to get the maintenance people to set up properly, we gave up and my dad ( a retired engineer) jerry-rigged a digital antenna so that they could get some television reception. The food is sub-par. They offer the same entrees at most meals. Quality of ingredients very poor , e.g. they use powdered eggs for scrambles. Offering of fruits and vegetables, especially in terms of variety, very limited. The grounds are well maintained, but location is isolating and shuttle use is very limited.

Hawai'i Kai does not use their budget well

If you can find a community within your budget, then go for it! My family had a particular budget and if there was anything else available, I would have looked elsewhere. When you go to interview these places, I'd advise you to visit a few times, and show up at (random) times that a tour isn't scheduled. They built this place up big during our tour/interview. Take your time while observing the community and avoid listening to the hype about things. They have a hard time keeping staff and for a while they didn't have enough drivers to take people out. The driving schedule is difficult to get your name on and to even get picked up. Residents say they wait hours after an appointment has been finished to be picked back up. I also got wind of some financial troubles they are having there. It's an ok place, but my loved one isn't the only person complaining about food and services not being the quality they should be for the amount of money. Activities are very few, and I don't feel that they can answer my loved ones questions. They are not very helpful at the front desk. I am glad he's somewhere where he can ask other residents for help if he needs it. But that help is not being provided by the people who work there. It seems like they are on their own there.

Beautiful facility however, you need to follow up on everything

As a family member you have to make sure that you follow up on absolutely everything with this community. You have to make sure that your loved one is being taken care of, make sure that they are getting fed and also making sure that they are clean. The care staff are good but the management staff did not follow up on anything and did not follow through with what they said that they would do.

Not worth the cost

Went on a tour a while back; the sales girl was nice but seemed too young and inexperienced. Although the place was very beautiful the price is way too high for what you get. They seem to sell how well cared for the patients are but when I came in there were residents sitting around looking bored, no activities or entertainment was happening.

Ivy Park Not Ready for Takeover

They are understaffed, not organized and they don't have their stuff together after the company takeover. There is a lack of communication, and policies. The residents are having to ask for salt and pepper and other items that were readily available to them prior to the changeover.

Nightmare in Roseville

Don't just go by the looks of the place. The decorating is beautiful, but you're not buying a home. You're buying care. And that's the most important thing. My loved one was constantly being sent to the hospital for emergency care, because the staff, even when there were actually enough of them around, are just not properly educated to handle situations when they arise. I was called at 11 pm to help care for my loved one, and stayed until 1 in the morning. They're not staffed properly. There was one man on staff who was truly wonderful, but others I feel are ill equipped. And there's definitely not enough nursing care. That needs to be around the clock. They have a renowned chef there who's an excellent cook, so you'll get good food. But I never once was allowed inside, except when they called for emergencies in the middle of the night.

nice room, no dryer for over two months

My mother lives here. For over two months she has had no access to a working dryer. For the very high rent paid at Oakmont surely they can provide working appliances.

Our tour experience

I didn’t really care for this place, and neither did my loved one. In the memory care side, the room that they showed us was pretty filthy, with stained carpets. That surprised me. And I didn’t really meet any of the staff. They were trying to convince me to put my loved one in a shared room which, I didn’t want to do. I think it's because that’s all they had available at the time.

Do a Trail Before Moving In

We weren't happy with the way the community dealt with the pandemic and our loved. one They wouldn't allow my loved one to leave the community for us to have holidays together. They would have forced my loved one to quarantine for 14 days. Then the community forced all the residents into quarantine. It took a long time to get the vaccines for the residents. The activities director was horrible. The only activities the community had were bingo and movies. The staff were good, specifically the girls that brought food to my loved one. We had to keep reminding the community to pick up our loved one's laundry and they moved their cleaning date. They would force my loved one to not leave, because they didn't realize which residents couldn't leave. the building

My review of Sienna at Otay Ranch Senior Living

They have been very hard to communicate with and really understand what is going on and we are just not sure if its because of covid or not.

my experience

The community said they were equipped for muti stage memory care but were not. My loved ones were only there for 6 weeks and they were not able to handle the different stages. I would not recommend this community for late-stage memory care. Make sure to ask questions about the care and their ability to care for your loved one.

My worst nightmare

They are understaffed and weren't prepared for my husband's admission. They had poor communication and no care plan in place as well. The physical building is beautiful until you are living there and know that they don't clean the floors and there was pink and black mold in my husband's toilet. Appearances are really deceiving. When I asked about staffing, I was assured that is was sufficient, but it was not. They didn't follow through with any of their promises either. It was scary to think I was leaving my husband there without adequate supervision or care.
