We did not select this community because they were not understanding of our needs. The tour was fine but the gal was not understanding. I kept going over and over the details. She could have reassured me and my concerns were validated and maybe it would have worked out.

When my mother first moved into the independent living her care was wonderful. All the employee would call her by name and tried to involve her in activities. As she began to decline in memory they insisted she be moved to assisted and thats when the problems started. Within a week of moving to assisted it was determined she was wandering "too much" and needed to move into memory care, which was full, so they moved her to the place called [Removed]. Most of the people there were alot worse off then she was and it made her angry and combative. The director seemed to feel that she had a psychological problem and didnt' understand why two moves within a week "really set her off". We were finally able to move her into the memory care unit within 2 weeks but things never really settled down. The were constantly calling us saying she needed additional care and raising the cost. She was having numerous falls and they insisted they couldn't care for her without her being on hospice. After being in memory care approximately 2 years I made the hard decision to move her to another facility that could "care for her better", and thank goodness I did. She is more involved in activities and the staff at the new facility if wonderful. The new company doesn't seem to be out for just increasing their rates and really care for their patients. There's singing, happy hour and other activitites that keep patients engaged and happy. If you're considering Sunrise look around, you may save yourself come headache and frustration, and your family member will be happier.

Not impressed

We were not impressed....the Memory Care Unit key code was forgotten twice, to get in and out. Tour guide couldn’t recall examples of activities or outings, had to be prodded for info. It was difficult to get into and out of the parking lot and the lot was small, difficult to manage visitors. They want your loved one to fit into their program rather than talking of their program meeting his needs. An outing to an Irish bar or casino didn’t meet my dad’s interests at all, but were mentioned frequently...this even with encouragement to focus on Catholic mass availability and community benevolent projects he could be involved with. He would have to have an attendant with him to go on the patio....likely to not happen as often as we expressed he enjoys the outdoors. Easily went off our list of maybes!

My father lived at Sunrise facility for a little over one year. Prior to moving my dad in, the family confirmed with Sunrise Intake Worker, [removed] that they would be able to take care of my dad’s urinary catheter care. They said they were equipped to do so and that the employees were trained to take care of residents with catheter care. Well, my dad had numerous infections while at this facility. Unfortunately from my observation the help there was not properly trained on urinary catheter care. My dad ultimately died from a severe urinary tract infection that shut down his kidneys. When he was transported to the hospital he had a fever of 104 degrees and low blood pressure. In addition, he did not have normal behavior per staff. All red flags for staff! This turn of events was very unfortunate and an obvious sign that staff is not trained or qualified to do routine assessments when patients are acting out of character or present with other symptoms. As for my Mom, she came to this facility and was there for approximately one month. She had her own private medical providers and we told this to [removed]. However, somehow a visiting Physicians Assistant came to the facility and did an evaluation and prescribed her medications. First of all, he was not authorized to see her because she had her own private doctors. And we indicated all of this information on the intake process. [removed]. I only share these two events with those of you that are looking for an assisted living facility for your parents or loved ones. I could go on and on. But, I have selected the most relevant events to share and both are medically related. Incidentally, I believe they have 1 RN and 2 med-techs on staff for the assisted living section. None of the staff that does the day to day care have any medical training or medical credentials to qualify them to evaluate a residents physical or mental health. I hope you will consider these events in the evaluation of Sunrise of Bonita, Chula Vista. Look beyond the decor and you will discover that Sunrise is understaffed, has a high attrition rate for their employees, and caregivers lack the training they need to identify health care needs. Last, I wish to praise two staff caregivers that went above and beyond their job description: [removed]

Did not live up to the tour

My dad just moved out. Oakmont looks fantastic on the tour. We thought it was the perfect choice. But they vastly failed to live up to our expectations. Here are some of the issues. Staff & Mgt. Turnover - The facility has been open less than a year yet they are on their 4th general manager. They are seeking their 3rd manager for the memory care area. This trickles down to every position. It seemed every time I went in there there was a new person caring for my dad, and that person knew nothing of my dad's needs. Pendents - They tout the pendent system, where residents can click a button to call for help. We tested my dad's pendent many times and never did we get response. One time we clicked it, followed up, and a caregiver told us that the pager goes off so many times from the pendents that there is no way he can respond, so he ignores them. Another time nobody was wearing the pager, and it was sitting in the office! The whole pendent thing became a joke because base on many test tries we knew nobody responded. Large Corporation - On our tour the salesperson touted the fact that this was not some huge corporation, but instead was a family run business. We found the opposite to be true. Time and time again we asked for services or made suggestions, only to be told that there was a "corporate policy" against it. For instance, we wanted to purchase a bed alarm pager for my dad, so that staff would know when he got out of bed, but corporate policy would not allow it. Lack of Communication - We wrote down and provided care instructions for my dad when he moved in and many times following that. Yet we never met a new employee who knew anything about the care needs of my dad. We continually were trying to train employees, one at a time. but the high turnover made this impossible for us to keep up with. Poor Memory Care Design - The residents in the memory care area continually head for the large double doors, only to have the alarm sound when they try to open them. Staff ends up spending a large amount of their time chasing down these door alarms. The design is really poor, and it takes away the caregivers from the core area and sends them to the parameters to chase down the door alarms. This means less care for those not pushing the doors. Activity Calendar - When we looked at Oakmont we loved the activity calendar. But when we moved my dad in, we found that many or most of the activities failed to meet our expectations. For instance, "Chair Exercises" was on the calendar. I attended one to find that they gathered the residents in front of the TV and played an exercise video! Nobody was exercising, and no staff were leading it or even encouraging people to participate. Too many more to mention! - The list goes on. The laundry service turns the white clothing into pink clothing, and splashes bleach on the colored clothing. I would come into my dad's room in the middle of the day to find a used adult diaper on the floor. My dad would frequently be out of his room without his glasses on, even though he greatly needs them. Items would disappear from the room and go lost. Ugg, it was always something! All of this is a shame because there are a some employees here who are absolutely fantastic. They try hard. Many are very very kind. But the corporate umbrella and high employee turnover rate over them makes their job really difficult. And the facility is beautiful. It really is a showcase. But, in total, it was not a good place for my dad. It seems like this place has all the potential in the world. But, at least in our case, they really failed to live up to even a minimum level of care for my dad.

Not impressed by what we saw

We toured this community when we were looking into care options for a loved one. I was not impressed by what I saw here. The residents in their memory care section seemed heavily medicated, and not very alert or engaged, which I did not think would be a good environment for my loved one. In addition, the person who showed us around seemed like she must have been new. She did not seem particularly knowledgeable about the facility or the care they provide, and did not have the answers to many of our questions.

He wanted out of here, he felt like he was talked down to and not treated with respect. The food wasn't very good, and he didn't like having to stand in line for your meals. They scolded you and wouldn't give you anything if you came late, for meals. It was very rigid.

Incredibly Disappointing Experience

I was extremely unhappy with their hard sell, change of prices, and very forceful marketing. It was just such a bad experience that I was afraid to try anywhere else. They absolutely 100% assured me that they would do an assessment and if my mom did not enter Sunrise that the deposit would be refunded. However when it came time to give them the $500 deposit they had me sign a contract that it was not refundable. I signed it but I was distressed, as anyone would be, while they're trying to find care for their parent. They did an in-home assessment and said that for her to be at Sunrise is would cost almost $7000 a month and the only room the had available was their biggest room. We said no, mom's insurance doesn't cover that much and we don't want a 2 bedroom so she wont' be moving to Sunrise. They never gave me a copy of the assessment, or a copy of what the $7000 would entail. After calling me almost daily, all of a sudden, I couldn't get a hold of anyone. The executive director didn't call me back and marketing person blew me off. I received a bill for the $500. I thought I would have to take them to small claims court. Finally, a month later I received an amended bill that said my balance was $0. Never did anyone call me back to answer any of my questions. It was absolutely the most disappointing experience. Sunrise is very beautiful but very high dollar and they were not as straightforward as I expected. After that I was afraid to put my mom anywhere.

Terrible Communication

That was a nightmare. There was a lot of turnover of staff. The executive staff doesn't really give a crap about the residents and their communication skills were horrible. Something would get broken or lost and there's no notification so when I go to visit and I ask about it all they can say is "I don't know." They lost her glasses a couple of times and her dentures once - stuff that was important to living they were negligent with and I didn't appreciate that. The staff in general, I just didn't really like that I had to deal with them. The food is very budget oriented. The floor she lived on was for people with memory loss and it's like they got the crap food. They ate spaghetti everyday and soup. The people downstairs got hamburgers and different things. It's like they gave preferential treatment because they were cognizant of what they were eating.

Poor Rating after one month

This assisted living facility is short staff and the staff is often overwhelmed. We were not given an orientation to the facility and have received inconsistent information regarding services. The second day my mother was at the facility, the staff forgot to serve her lunch. My mother’s room is not well maintained and we have had problems with getting serious things like the thermostat repaired. My mother’s room hasn’t been cleaned nor has her laundry been done after two weeks. The managers are often dismissive. I’m thinking of moving my mother if things are not better. I am going to speak to the administrator tomorrow. I’ll update this review if things are resolved.

Management is horrible and not to mention the Co workers don't like each other, a few have argued and almost gotten in fights in front of the residents. They are always short on staff, and each caregiver has too many residents on their list to assist everyone on time. You will pay thousands of dollars for your rent only! The services are considered an extra charge. The leads mistreat the residents and they charge every time the resident pulls the cord for help. The residents have been left with no hot water multiple times. Don't send your loved ones here it's best to hire a personal caregiver at home.

Only If Can Self-Advocate

My mom stayed at Las Palmas for about a month in spring [Removed]. Unless you are able to advocate for someone staying there, or the resident can vocally advocate for themselves, I highly recommend AGAINST Las Palmas as an assisted living community. [Removed] in Sales was very helpful in getting our mom in and helping us with furniture via phone and email - Really wonderful in a terrible and stressful time. But once inside the facility the experience was quite poor. While the care givers we met were very kind, there were far too few. The promise was with the push of a button my mom would receive care in 10-15 mins. Sometimes my mom would wait for an hour. Also, when visiting her we could smell her and went to inquire about if her weekly shower had happened. They had to look it up and realized it had somehow been missed. But they couldn't explain why. In addition, while we were there their button service had been experiencing difficulties. For residents that can walk to the front desk this is not a big deal. However my mom was transitioning to a wheelchair and she HAD to push the button to do anything like go to the bathroom. My sister and i had to alert the desk her button wasn't working 3 times. That means even though they were aware the system was having difficulty they didn't put anything else in place (maybe a walkie talkie or having someone check on her more regularly) for a very vulnerable resident. Mind you we paid for the services she needed because your cost is based on need. But they didn't live up to the services we were paying for. Also no one in management knew our mom by name. The care givers did. In all the time we'd visit we never once saw a manager in the hallways - not the Exec Director, no Asst Directors, not Sales, no one. I was told I passed the Activities Director once, but she hadn't identified herself and had nothing showing she worked there. One day I needed to drop off a payment check. Front desk reception told me to knock on the door of the Finance person. When I did she was clearly bothered. She told me I should just leave checks in the box. I asked her why we never saw management. Why doors were always closed. She waved this complaint away saying she was doing pay roll. I asked her if she even knew who my mother was. And she looked at me blankly. One positive is that the food seemed to be celebrated by the residents. Apparently there was a new chef and they loved the food. So again if it is someone that can self-advocate and looking for more of a retirement community seems could be OK (hence two stars, not one). But if you need to trust the care of a loved one to a place, and you want them to be known and loved - this is not the place. We now have our mom in a facility in WA state. I am not sure if the regulations are different as we didn't try any place else in CA, but it is night and day. The staff all know our mom. They are invested in her happiness and health. They all know us. It feels like we are a team all working together. We know if we don't come in they have her best interests at heart. If you are reading this, good luck! It is a tough time.

Not The Right Place

I did not like anything at this community when I went to tour. It looked dated and they had a TV in a room. I did not care for it at all.

Our experience with Felicita Vida

At first glance this is a gorgeous facility! When I went on my first tour I was greeted by an enthusiastic facility director and was shown around. Every turn revealed a beautiful and well thought out design. When you walk through the door you don't feel like your in a "nursing home" just the kinda place you want your loved one to be. But, that's were it al fell short. My mother was excited about moving there but the food is awful and the "care" is lacking. We have had to hire are own care givers who cooks meals at our house and brings them to her. My mother really wanted help with medications. We were told a "nurse" would manage the meds and her care plan. The biggest disappointment is that "assisted care" is a very vague term. It does not provide medical care. The nurse does not act in the capacity of a nurse she just trains "med techs "to hand your loved one their medication and we have been repeatedly told that they are not nurses and are not able to determine what the client need. So why are they giving the meds? It makes no sense, but it with in the law. No one checks to see if the meds are correct or the right Doctor is ordering the meds. And if your loved one needs a "when necessary medication( (prn).. Good luck because the med tech can't tell your loved one they have it. The brighter side , the activities are awesome! Ashley is an effervescent young lady who gives her heart to the place. She has developed activities that are geared for the individual and mentally stimulating. We would pull our mother out today if We didn't think the staff really wants to make things right. If your looking for a beautifully stimulating environment for your loved one this is it. Hopefully they will fix the medication dispensing service I know we would pay what it would cost to have a real nurse there controlling that and improve the food being served. Felicita Vida is a beautiful place. It has the potential to be the best care facility in north county.

Problems encountered after deciding

My experience was very positive at the beginning, but once I made the commitment to move my parents into Sunrise some of the promises they had indicated to me failed to happen. It made me question if my parents care was also going to be different than described. Additionally, the amount of money they charged to do an assessment that involved very little was unacceptable. I'm a speech pathologist and can tell you that questions that should have been asked weren't with regards to cognition, memory, and swallowing. So while my first impressions were high I was left with a very low opinion.
