A Place for Mom has scored Oakmont Management Group with 8.3 out of 10 using our proprietary review score based on 778 reviews in the last 2 years. Over all time, Oakmont Management Group has 3,166 reviews with an average "overall experience" of 4.3 out of 5.
I am a resident at Fountaingrove Lodge. My greatest disappointment, by far, is the "Fine Dining" experience. The FGL website claimed that the food was prepared by the "finest culinary professionals" trained in the field. Employees received the famous Oakmont training. The reality is that the food is dull and repetitive (the menu only changes every three months - we were promised menu changes every six weeks). The whole food point system is a sham and obviously a money maker for Oakmont. DO NOT base your decision on the food served at marketing events. Also, do your homework on the annual rent increases. The majority of current residents were promised, by Marketing, annual rent increases of "around 3 1/2 %" In reality, the raises are much higher. And remember, the percentage rent increase compounds each year. And do not trust Oakmont Management. Get everything in writing, and go over the marketing efforts and the contracts carefully.

Aug, 2019 Our experience was not very good. Although my wife is essentially an Invalid and unable to walk, she was assessed as being acceptable in their facility. She has to be moved with a "patient" or "Hoya" lift. Their nurse said they would train their caregivers to operate the "lift". The training was inadequate and many caregiver didn't know how to properly set it up for correct positioning I had to assist many times. In addition, the caregivers are almost always running behind on rounds. We have had to wait over an hour at times after hitting the "call" button. In other words, their very high costs are not what we bargained for. I will give them a good rating on their dining room. The food is very good and well prepared. If we weren't always late for dining it would have been better as far as the service goes. In our situation, I could not recommend the care for assisted living. Lastly, I liked the staff and the facility itself which is 5 star.

If you are the perfect memory care patient this may be the place for you. If you fail to fit in the box things can become difficult and expensive such as 24 hour individual care. If you want to leave know that they do not refund very much of community deposit at all. Look elsewhere dementia changes but their answer is make you pay more

Our experience at Sunrise was mixed - with some good and some bad experiences - but the bad was bad enough that we moved our parents out. We had really wanted Sunrise to work and were hoping it would - but our parents were very unhappy and we were concerned about the care they were receiving. The more serious concerns were medication mix ups that we had to bring to their attention and delay in calling 911 for a serious emergency until they had their paperwork ready. My elderly father had to use his cell phone to call 911, while Sunrise delayed. The head nurse's attitude and behavior to the residents was also a very negative experience for us. For the price we were paying, we should have gotten top notch care - instead we worried more about them at Sunrise than we did when they lived at home. On the plus side, the daily care they received from the attendants was good and they enjoyed the meals and activities. The lack of transportation to their doctors was also an issue - requiring the family to transport them to the doctors.

I was told Bradford was recently acquired by Sunrise. They do not have the same capabilities as Sunrise communities. I do appreciate that the director was very clear and honest that they didn't have enough staff to meet our individual care needs. I felt that our tour was rather rushed. The community looked very tired, it wasn't dirty but it needed and uplift. The memory care section also had a very strong unappealing smell of urine.

When my mother first moved into the independent living her care was wonderful. All the employee would call her by name and tried to involve her in activities. As she began to decline in memory they insisted she be moved to assisted and thats when the problems started. Within a week of moving to assisted it was determined she was wandering "too much" and needed to move into memory care, which was full, so they moved her to the place called [Removed]. Most of the people there were alot worse off then she was and it made her angry and combative. The director seemed to feel that she had a psychological problem and didnt' understand why two moves within a week "really set her off". We were finally able to move her into the memory care unit within 2 weeks but things never really settled down. The were constantly calling us saying she needed additional care and raising the cost. She was having numerous falls and they insisted they couldn't care for her without her being on hospice. After being in memory care approximately 2 years I made the hard decision to move her to another facility that could "care for her better", and thank goodness I did. She is more involved in activities and the staff at the new facility if wonderful. The new company doesn't seem to be out for just increasing their rates and really care for their patients. There's singing, happy hour and other activitites that keep patients engaged and happy. If you're considering Sunrise look around, you may save yourself come headache and frustration, and your family member will be happier.

We were not impressed....the Memory Care Unit key code was forgotten twice, to get in and out. Tour guide couldn’t recall examples of activities or outings, had to be prodded for info. It was difficult to get into and out of the parking lot and the lot was small, difficult to manage visitors. They want your loved one to fit into their program rather than talking of their program meeting his needs. An outing to an Irish bar or casino didn’t meet my dad’s interests at all, but were mentioned frequently...this even with encouragement to focus on Catholic mass availability and community benevolent projects he could be involved with. He would have to have an attendant with him to go on the patio....likely to not happen as often as we expressed he enjoys the outdoors. Easily went off our list of maybes!

My father lived at Sunrise facility for a little over one year. Prior to moving my dad in, the family confirmed with Sunrise Intake Worker, [removed] that they would be able to take care of my dad’s urinary catheter care. They said they were equipped to do so and that the employees were trained to take care of residents with catheter care. Well, my dad had numerous infections while at this facility. Unfortunately from my observation the help there was not properly trained on urinary catheter care. My dad ultimately died from a severe urinary tract infection that shut down his kidneys. When he was transported to the hospital he had a fever of 104 degrees and low blood pressure. In addition, he did not have normal behavior per staff. All red flags for staff! This turn of events was very unfortunate and an obvious sign that staff is not trained or qualified to do routine assessments when patients are acting out of character or present with other symptoms. As for my Mom, she came to this facility and was there for approximately one month. She had her own private medical providers and we told this to [removed]. However, somehow a visiting Physicians Assistant came to the facility and did an evaluation and prescribed her medications. First of all, he was not authorized to see her because she had her own private doctors. And we indicated all of this information on the intake process. [removed]. I only share these two events with those of you that are looking for an assisted living facility for your parents or loved ones. I could go on and on. But, I have selected the most relevant events to share and both are medically related. Incidentally, I believe they have 1 RN and 2 med-techs on staff for the assisted living section. None of the staff that does the day to day care have any medical training or medical credentials to qualify them to evaluate a residents physical or mental health. I hope you will consider these events in the evaluation of Sunrise of Bonita, Chula Vista. Look beyond the decor and you will discover that Sunrise is understaffed, has a high attrition rate for their employees, and caregivers lack the training they need to identify health care needs. Last, I wish to praise two staff caregivers that went above and beyond their job description: [removed]

My dad just moved out. Oakmont looks fantastic on the tour. We thought it was the perfect choice. But they vastly failed to live up to our expectations. Here are some of the issues. Staff & Mgt. Turnover - The facility has been open less than a year yet they are on their 4th general manager. They are seeking their 3rd manager for the memory care area. This trickles down to every position. It seemed every time I went in there there was a new person caring for my dad, and that person knew nothing of my dad's needs. Pendents - They tout the pendent system, where residents can click a button to call for help. We tested my dad's pendent many times and never did we get response. One time we clicked it, followed up, and a caregiver told us that the pager goes off so many times from the pendents that there is no way he can respond, so he ignores them. Another time nobody was wearing the pager, and it was sitting in the office! The whole pendent thing became a joke because base on many test tries we knew nobody responded. Large Corporation - On our tour the salesperson touted the fact that this was not some huge corporation, but instead was a family run business. We found the opposite to be true. Time and time again we asked for services or made suggestions, only to be told that there was a "corporate policy" against it. For instance, we wanted to purchase a bed alarm pager for my dad, so that staff would know when he got out of bed, but corporate policy would not allow it. Lack of Communication - We wrote down and provided care instructions for my dad when he moved in and many times following that. Yet we never met a new employee who knew anything about the care needs of my dad. We continually were trying to train employees, one at a time. but the high turnover made this impossible for us to keep up with. Poor Memory Care Design - The residents in the memory care area continually head for the large double doors, only to have the alarm sound when they try to open them. Staff ends up spending a large amount of their time chasing down these door alarms. The design is really poor, and it takes away the caregivers from the core area and sends them to the parameters to chase down the door alarms. This means less care for those not pushing the doors. Activity Calendar - When we looked at Oakmont we loved the activity calendar. But when we moved my dad in, we found that many or most of the activities failed to meet our expectations. For instance, "Chair Exercises" was on the calendar. I attended one to find that they gathered the residents in front of the TV and played an exercise video! Nobody was exercising, and no staff were leading it or even encouraging people to participate. Too many more to mention! - The list goes on. The laundry service turns the white clothing into pink clothing, and splashes bleach on the colored clothing. I would come into my dad's room in the middle of the day to find a used adult diaper on the floor. My dad would frequently be out of his room without his glasses on, even though he greatly needs them. Items would disappear from the room and go lost. Ugg, it was always something! All of this is a shame because there are a some employees here who are absolutely fantastic. They try hard. Many are very very kind. But the corporate umbrella and high employee turnover rate over them makes their job really difficult. And the facility is beautiful. It really is a showcase. But, in total, it was not a good place for my dad. It seems like this place has all the potential in the world. But, at least in our case, they really failed to live up to even a minimum level of care for my dad.

We toured this community when we were looking into care options for a loved one. I was not impressed by what I saw here. The residents in their memory care section seemed heavily medicated, and not very alert or engaged, which I did not think would be a good environment for my loved one. In addition, the person who showed us around seemed like she must have been new. She did not seem particularly knowledgeable about the facility or the care they provide, and did not have the answers to many of our questions.

I was extremely unhappy with their hard sell, change of prices, and very forceful marketing. It was just such a bad experience that I was afraid to try anywhere else. They absolutely 100% assured me that they would do an assessment and if my mom did not enter Sunrise that the deposit would be refunded. However when it came time to give them the $500 deposit they had me sign a contract that it was not refundable. I signed it but I was distressed, as anyone would be, while they're trying to find care for their parent. They did an in-home assessment and said that for her to be at Sunrise is would cost almost $7000 a month and the only room the had available was their biggest room. We said no, mom's insurance doesn't cover that much and we don't want a 2 bedroom so she wont' be moving to Sunrise. They never gave me a copy of the assessment, or a copy of what the $7000 would entail. After calling me almost daily, all of a sudden, I couldn't get a hold of anyone. The executive director didn't call me back and marketing person blew me off. I received a bill for the $500. I thought I would have to take them to small claims court. Finally, a month later I received an amended bill that said my balance was $0. Never did anyone call me back to answer any of my questions. It was absolutely the most disappointing experience. Sunrise is very beautiful but very high dollar and they were not as straightforward as I expected. After that I was afraid to put my mom anywhere.

That was a nightmare. There was a lot of turnover of staff. The executive staff doesn't really give a crap about the residents and their communication skills were horrible. Something would get broken or lost and there's no notification so when I go to visit and I ask about it all they can say is "I don't know." They lost her glasses a couple of times and her dentures once - stuff that was important to living they were negligent with and I didn't appreciate that. The staff in general, I just didn't really like that I had to deal with them. The food is very budget oriented. The floor she lived on was for people with memory loss and it's like they got the crap food. They ate spaghetti everyday and soup. The people downstairs got hamburgers and different things. It's like they gave preferential treatment because they were cognizant of what they were eating.
