Review for Ivy Park at Santa Monica

1. Used to absolutely love it, but things have changed in the past 2 years, and not for the best, in my opinion. 2. Quite clean. They do have some sort of recurring, multi-location issue with a water leak that smells like sewage, but they handle it quickly. The staff are very conscientious about keeping things clean and neat. 3. We love the staff. From the front door reception to the kitchen to the floor staff/caregivers... they are caring and patient and dote on their residents. The change in corporate ownership, however, has been a challenge resulting in a lot of turnover. Most of the staff with whom we've become close have left, and there are quite a few new people who are still learning their role. 4. We've had some issues, but the staff have been responsive. 5. There seems to be a good variety and attention to dietary needs. 6. There used to be activities running multiple times a day, and an activities director with boundless creativity and energy who led them... they used to take a group offside for short trips to have lunch or go to the park, etc, but that seems to be over now. I have seen bingo being played sometimes, and word games on the TV in the common room, but overall, the atmosphere is decidedly more sedentary and television-based. A musician visits the facility periodically, and everyone seems to enjoy that. 7. I don't know if it measures up to the standard we found when we first placed Trudy there. She's comfortable and safe; she has opportunities to eat good food and she gets the care we could not safely provide at home, and for that, we are very thankful. There are things I find very frustrating and that does color my opinion of the facility.

Very high staff turnover

They have a very high turnover of staff. Lots of things fall under the rug. My mom was on the med program and they incorrectly dosed her, gave her wrong meds, gave her meds wrong time of day, said they'd do daily check ins and didn't but charged us for it. Part of rent is for the apartment to get cleaned once a week and my moms been there for 4 months and her room has only been cleaned 3 times and all 3 of those times we had to specifically ask multiple times for since they didn't do it on the normal cleaning day. The staff is friendly but many things that you pay a lot of money for and are promised don't actually happen and when you try to point that out and ask why things are not happening, it takes weeks to get a real answer and nothing is really done about it. The only reason she's still there is because they're one of the only places around here that offer a very low income option and it's the only places we can afford. They had the only elevator out for 2 months and residents in walkers were leaving their walkers at the top of the stairs and hobbling down 3 flights of stairs because there was supposed to be a staff member taking residents down the staff elevator but they rarely answered the phone or responded and residents were extremely unsafely trying to get themselves up and down flights of stairs and having to walk around without their walkers.

nationwide elder care labor shortage

As a result of pneumonia, my mom has become bedridden and is now in hospice care, so she has graduated to the maximum tier of the care fee schedule, while she no longer participates in group activities. She is on a puree diet, which the facility has accommodated. In addition, there was a rate increase (both rent and care) this month. In addition, there has been a lot of turnover in many critical positions, including the memory care director (turned over twice since my mom moved in). They seem to be suffering from the nationwide staffing shortage, and I see new faces frequently. From my observations, the caregivers are caring and kind, but they are stretched thin, and I worry about burnout.

Hoping for improvements

The care team has had many issues getting to the clients in a timely manner waits of 11/2 hour due to understaffing. It was our understanding that we would only have to wait 5 to 7 minutes after a service call unfortunately that has not been our case. They have just recently changed him so most of my complaints are about the caregivers or lack there of the shortage so hopefully it will be resolved with the new ownership. That is our hope.

Our family's experience Improvement- hire more help and pay a decent wage.

The staffing for memory care sometimes is sparse. We have come into a dirty bathroom in the room of my father-in-law a few times. Memory care needs more help and should have better staffing as we are paying the maximum for the care.

Not Satisfied with recent changes

When we first moved my mom in, they used tablecloths for evening meals. It made it homey and fancy at one time. Since the new company has changed things, they no can no longer have the tablecloths. Maybe due to cost? A complaint was filed from the residents but not brought back. They have way too much pasta for meals. Again cheaper?? They have changed cheifs a couple times. The activities director has also changed. They don't do enough to engage physical activity for those able, mostly older chair bound or walker dependent residences. They cancel a lot of activities if the activities director fills in for another staff member out sick. Maybe just too small of a place for my mom, but it was close to my house and looked great at first, then the changes started happening with the Oak Park buy out. Needless to say my mom has not been happy. And now we've been hit with a <fee removed> rent increase after being there one year.

Staff is nice but residents are not

Mom has been living there for three months. At first all residents seemed friendly, but after a few weeks, it was clear there are "clicks" that are not welcoming to all. This is just like middle school and even though the facility has a "no bullying" policy, nothing is done to help those who do not feel welcome in the dining area and at activies. The facility has a policy that if a resident does not want to sit with someone else, they need to leave the situation and not the person they do not like. This is not enforced and has caused a great deal of anxiety and unwelcomeness. This should not happen to people this age who should be living their golden years, happy and relaxed. It's too bad, as the facility is nice and clean and the staff if very friendly. If the facility would simply enforce their policies, this could be fixed fairly quickly.

Physical therapist left just after moved in & not replaced, more recreational activities needed or more than once a week for activity, veteran groups, cocktail hours daily. Group for depression & illnesses. Housecleaning scheduled weekly & including cleaning bed linens& making beds. The cost is outrageous, but nice size apartment. Ice maker would be appreciated in frig. Educational meetings, more rummiekube game time,

Hoping for improvements

The care staff in the AM was caring and loving. They have let management staff go and many care staff. They recently brought in a new community director to improve the community in many departments. Hopefully it will be successful. The food was carb heavy and individual dietary needs were not considered. The activity staff changed and I'd find the residents sitting with a monitor to watch. Interaction was good when they brought in dogs or goats with their handlers. Mom was happy with the care staff and most made her feel very cared for and cared about. But there were 4 different memory care directors in the almost 2 years mom was there leading to a lack of routine and strong leadership. But really hoping the new director will make the necessary changes. My brother and I met with her after mom passed away to give her our observations. She was not only receptive but she had made the same observations and had already started to make big changes.

Review for Ivy Park at Bonita

I'd say it was expensive for what you get. I was told they would have one to one nursing care since it was required and I was required to pay a lot more for it and they never received one to one care. My aunt would have to call be at three in the morning to get. Me to call the facility just to get help to the bathroom as no one came when she would call on several occasions. Administration doesn't want to speak with you especially if you're there in person, once the have all the papers signed. The only people we were happy with were the people you actually did the care during the day.

Eat a meal with your loved one

A very positive experience with facility staff-members in the memory-care unit last week. They go out of their way to be helpful. They are courteous and conscientious. The facility is clean and the residents are looked after. I was expecting the food to be at the very least decent. It is not. It was the most unappealing, unappetizing food I have ever seen. The salad looked like it was two weeks past its freshness date, and the mystery meat with the noodles looked like dried shoe leather. My friend, when asked about her favorite meal remarked, “None of it.” I understand it is hard to cook for many different palates and for seniors with different needs, but really this was beyond awful!

The turnover has been 100% since Mom has been there from the top down. Most of the caregivers are caring and respectful but a few others are abrupt and can be rude at times. Mom has had several minor injuries since her arrival, generally when there has not been adequate staffing.

Beautiful facility for those who are able. Some turnover and staffing causes inconsistencies but overall highly recommen

It's a beautiful facility and good value compared to other places by far. Administration needs help. Very high turnover in kitchen and administration. Help leads to inconsistencies. When my aunt had a stroke She had to be reassessed by many who disagreed And it ended up costing an additional [fee removed] a month in care by the facility which we felt was ridiculous. But for a healthy adult, it's an excellent place Administration was the biggest headache so far. We are still dealing with her trying to get back home from the nursing home after her stroke. Still I would recommend this place. Just be understanding of high. Much assisted care will cost as one progresses or has any healthcare crises. Good location. Staff are very friendly and attentive and responsive except for administration when you have serious health needs and considerations or changes. Very high turnover in kitchen staff meant sometimes there are no servers and no consistency in the menu and elderly people become very attached as we all do to their favorites on the menu.

Ivy Park at Oakland Hills review

Our loved one moved there in [date removed] when it was Sunrise. Ivy Park took over last July and Dad passed away last month. He'd been on hospice for a year so didn't leave his room so I can't speak to activities or meals. The apartments and spaces are very nice - clean and updated recently. Staff in person are wonderful but with a constant turnover of leadership (before and after the transition) there were some issues around billing and health assessment that no one was managing. So that resulted in constant frustration when I would reach out with questions and no one would respond. For months on end.

Nice place overall

Reasons we chose Ivy Park at Otay Ranch - New facility (only 5 years old), price, location (nearby family) and overall presentation. Overall good experience work orders take a while to complete. Maintenance issues take a while to get fixed.

Disappointed - not what we expected

I moved my loved one out in [date removed]. The turnover of the staff is awful. I don't want to speak too badly of them, but it was also very unorganized. The laundering of the clothes was terrible. Always had missing items.
