Room for improvement.

I would like to see, especially when a resident is new to a place, staff keeping an eye out and seeing that they are getting around okay and aren't getting lost. She has had a rough time learning her way around. We have had some issues with housekeeping and the thoroughness of the laundry. There have been some issues and confusion with billing, and timing of days, and charges. There have been minor falls, and no record of the incident. It's in a convenient location for our family, and we also think it's important not to make too many changes for our loved one, so we will continue to work with them, however there are some things that definitely need work.

In general I think they do a good job at Morningside of Riverchase. The facility itself is clean, and the staff are friendly. Considering they are a fairly newly opened facility, they have some issues to work through. More activities should be planned for the residents, such as organized shopping day trips.

Mixed experience

We've had somewhat of a mixed experience at Atria Buckhead so far. The week after my loved one moved in they had to place the facility on a lockdown to prevent the spread of a flu, which unfortunately did not make for a good first impression for my loved one. But the staff have been very accommodating, and have worked hard with me to try and win her over after that experience.

No AC at Southern Plantation

My parents lived there. The air conditioner was broken in the entry hall and the hall on which they lived from April till September, 2014. It was over 90 degrees and horrible working conditions for the employees and receptionist. We could not go sit in the front community area because of the heat when we visited. I asked numerous times about the AC and they kept saying they were getting it fixed - finally in September. That was 5 months of unbearable heat. I would not recommend this facility. The food is bad too. I regret not reporting them to the health department.

Our second choice

This was a facility we toured when we were looking into options for my loved one. This was one of the facilities we were seriously considering, and was our second choice. It was a very nice looking community, and the residents looked well cared for. It didn't have as many amenities and activities as the other option we were considering, and during our tour it just didn't feel quite as friendly.

Depends on the care that is needed.

It was nice but, very pricey. We were paying a lot extra for her care, but she was unkempt and they were not taking her to the bathroom often enough. Her clothes were dirty and they never washed them on time. There was a lot of turnover. The way they assessed the monthly fees were so complicated, I couldn't tell what the charges were for. If your people are able to care for themselves I give them a four, but if they need personal care assistance I would give them a two.

Really Went Downhill

My mother was there for 5 years. The first two years it was really good and it just went downhill after that. There were 3 or 4 different owners and after the first on it was not good. My mother went without hot water in her room for 6 months. The were friendly but by the time were were moving my mother out it was not clean. Actually, her room was filthy when we moved her out. The new nurse there is pretty ignorant. The staff are told to speak only to the POA about the care. When I went in there to ask questions they wouldn't tell me anything. They said I had to call my brother. Another thing they did was serve them ice cream after every meal and my mother is diabetic!

This is a very large personal care home-not an assisted living facility.

This facility IS NOT an assisted living facility but they will say they provide assisted living. Make sure you are educated in the difference between a personal care home (which is what they are and put themselves out to be) and an assisted living facility, at least in Georgia, so your expectations are realistic. The difference significantly impacts the required staff qualifications and accountability. The following website can provide good, unbiased information that might help guide you in making the right decision. It is important you know what you are getting for your money and your loved one. Give it a chance, don't give up right away.

There were some problems with medication. I would encourage people with loved ones moving into any community to give it a couple of months. There is such a shock and adjustment that even if they hate it at the beginning, just wait it out. The caregivers and the kitchen staff and the cooks were good they did a fine job. We had issues with the director and the administrator. It was clean and beautiful though.

Not recommended

The $[removed] nonrefundable payment that must be paid immediately was excessive. Dad was only there 6 weeks, so that $[removed] seemed unreasonable. I think they should have pro rated that charge. When we were cleaning out dad's room, the main thing the facility director was concerned about was to make sure we took his mattress. I would not recommend the bungalows to anyone.

Needs a lot of improvement before we can recommend

Quality of care - 5 (clinical nursing staff), 2 (aid staff). My mother-in-law was a resident at Bungalows for a few months. Near the end of her stay, she fell in her room and suffered major bruising and a cut on her face. She was rushed to the ER by ambulance, was examined thoroughly, and returned to Bungalows a few hours later. Unfortunately, we only learned about the fall (and related ER trip) about 9 days later. We went to Bungalows to pick up my mother-in-law to take her to the ER because the staff nurse advised us that her leg was swollen. When we arrived, we noticed bruising on my mother-in-law's face and a healing cut above her eye. We immediately spoke to nursing staff and asked where the bruising/cut was from. They consulted the computer records and told us that she had fallen in her room in the early morning about 9 days prior and had been taken to the ER where she had also been diagnosed with pneumonia (which we also were unaware of). We expressed our frustration that we were not notified about the fall or her ER visit, especially since when my mother-in-law had fallen previously, resulting in NO injuries, nursing staff had called us immediately. This fall was MUCH worse, and yet we weren't contacted at all. Later at the ER, the medical staff noticed additional bruising on my mother-in-law's torso and leg (in fact, the bruising on the leg was the apparent cause of the swelling). Since this was our first awareness of this additional bruising, we again reached out the Bungalows and expressed our increasing concern over the extent of the fall and inquired more about what had been done at the ER visit so that diagnostic testing to determine the extent of the damage would not be duplicated. Soon after, we requested the records related to the fall from the Bungalows, and we discovered that the aid working with my mother-in-law the morning of her fall had actually recorded in the written record that she had spoken with my husband that morning and notified him about the fall (which was patently false). We even reviewed our phone records and found that we did not have any missed calls from Bungalows indicating they had not even attempted to reach us. We spoke with the Bungalows' administration about not only the lack of notification, but also about the aid's falsification of the records. The admin stated that they would review their procedures, but we were not very confident that anything would change. (Due to my mother-in-law's condition and our lack of confidence in Bungalows, she ended up being transferred from the ER to a nursing home and never returned to Bungalows.) While we had been very pleased with Bungalows' staff up to this point, especially their nursing staff, this experience very much soured our perception of the facility. While the aid who falsified the record was obviously in the wrong, and the rest of the staff might be very competent and professional, our experience with the facility following her fall leads us to the conclusion that the Bungalows has a lot of improvement to make on how they handle notifications and dealing with bad staff before we would be comfortable recommending the facility to anyone else.
