A Place for Mom has scored Aegis with 7.5 out of 10 using our proprietary review score based on 83 reviews in the last 2 years. Over all time, Aegis has 189 reviews with an average "overall experience" of 4.4 out of 5.
We cannot answer the cleanliness as we never saw it. The meals and dining gets a 3 based on our loved ones feedback. what we craved was more attention to detail in staff entering mom's room (she often felt her privacy was being invaded) and honestly because they only had one level of memory care, those with higher functioning capacity (like our mom) felt a bit out of place.

Food is good in the main dining room. Staff is nice and seems well trained and very kind. Activities are OK in Life's Neighborhood- much better in Assisted Living. It is very clean and well maintained. A beautiful building.

Overall the facility is excellent in the care they give. I just wasn't adequately informed of the future costs. Recently they had a flu type outbreak and they asked residents to stay in their rooms for several days. Their food was delivered to their room. It lasted just 4-5 days. Staff wore masks. I told one of the administrators about the fasting problem. I will ask what they have done about that. Communication is usually good.

Our overall experience was wonderful. They were very helpful and transporting and assisting in the transitioning of my mom from home to assisted living. That can be a very difficult experience that they made it as easy as possible. The staff and caregivers that took care of mom we're kind and gentle. Her room was perfect for what she needed.. The facility was well maintained.

Al (general manager), [name removed](community coordinator) are both outstanding.. We love the aids in memory care ([name removed], [name removed], [name removed]and others) the staff turn over has been limited and we always find them helpful... The food is great (mom has put on some weight!) and we always find everything clean and welcoming. My only issue has been consistent communication which I think is very common in memory care units.

I think overall the experience has been good. I would give it a four or five. It was hard for my mom to adjust in the beginning, but it seems like she's getting used to it. The rooms are larger than any of the other places we had gone to my parents like most of the food. They like the outings each week where they get to go to the park or someplace like that. Lots of activities every hour, my mom says she's tired lol. Staff is very nice, we have not had any issues with anyone there and they were very good about making my sisters and I feel comfortable about leaving my mom and dad there in the beginning.

The building was absolutely lovely. The staff and management were all very friendly. The activities were fun and well organized. Food service was sketchy. Twice we had to wait 45 minutes for the food. And once we had to wait a long time for waffles and strawberries, and they brought out just waffles, saying they were out of strawberries. But we have heard they hired a new chef so maybe that area has improved.

My responses are mostly related to the Memory Care (MC) unit. My sister is always well groomed and dressed in clean clothes. I appreciate being able to get her mani-pedis and hair cuts at the facility. That being said, the amenities at Aegis Ballard were oversold. The beauty shop is rarely open and you must schedule appointments well in advance. Similarly, the facility bar was promoted as having excellent prices for beer, wine and well drinks - making it an excellent place to socialize with friends and family. In reality, the bar is NEVER open. Not once in the year my sister has lived there. You can sit there and watch a large screen TV, but there is no service and there are no drinks, alcoholic or otherwise. Family members will go to the corner market and buy wine to drink in the bar. The food in the main dining room is excellent. It is far better than on memory care that I view as being second class citizens when it comes to meals. No choice of meals or beverages, and no condiments. I take my sister to the dining room for meals several times a week. Overall, the facility is extremely clean. However, I have had problems getting the carpet in my sister's room cleaned or replaced. An ongoing problem. Frustrating. This has to do with upper management for the facility and is not related to the care staff. The care staff are all lovely. This includes the Director of Care Services, [name removed], who is always responsive. Sadly, like most LTC facilities, the turnover is high. The training/hand off to new staff could be better. For example, my sister does not see well out of her left eye - but this information is rarely passed on to new hires. I wish all staff took the initiative to frequently eyeball and assess the MC residents to see if they look comfortable, if their eye-glasses need cleaning, if they need their noses wiped, etc. Sigh. I am pleased with the weekly in-house activities designed for memory care residents. I wish they took the MC residents on more outings. (actually, there aren't many outings for independent or assisted-living folks either). I was told that Aegis Ballard was going to purchase its own Transport Van for resident outings. It's been a year, and still no T Van. It is the convenient location (only a mile walk from my home) that keeps me from aggressively comparing Aegis Ballard to other Memory Care facilities.

The staff has great communication. Because I was not always physically their in Vegas to be with Terry they were very intentional about keeping me up to date about his progress and any incidents that happened. Their activity team is phenomenal. They are always making sure that the tenants are engaged or trying to engage them as much as possible.

I moved my husband from Aegis to another home because it was far from me and he was not able to take advantage of many of the good things such as activities and dining for which I had chosen it. It turned out his dementia was too advanced to participate in most assisted living activities. It is expensive, and though I wished that I didn't have to move him for reasons of proximity, I ultimately was glad that I did move him because he is now in a place that is equally good, better in terms of dining for the memory care residents, larger room, and at significantly lower cost. I think that Aegis is deluxe in many ways and has a higher ratio of caregivers, but there were downsides. One is that if a resident bumps his or her head they are sent to the emergency room at hospital. This sounds like good care, but since a person with dementia is not necessarily good at articulating what happened, my husband was sent a couple of times unnecessarily and that is a trauma too, plus the insurance arrangements were not correct and I may still end up paying huge bills for unneeded care.

We brought our sister-in-law to Aegis after the hospital. We did not feel safe taking her home. Aegis had “respite care” for anyone needing temporary help. The staff was wonderful, orienting us on what needed to be done. They provided a room fully furnished for us to move in right away. Through their care, my sister-in-law felt safe and at home. She has recovered to 90% now.

My below opinions/responses are based on my week stay with my mother, when she moved in, as well as email/phone conversations with various staff members over the past year. My mother, however, may have differing opinions from mine; she often can be selfish, moody, insistent, unrealistic, controlling and stubborn. From the moment I was introduced to [name removed] (Marketing Director), I was convinced that Aegis was the right and best place for (now, only) our mother. It was clear she believes in the company and quality of care available. My brother had the same reaction when he spoke with her. We were also very relieved that Aegis Granada Hills provides a setting for aging in place, and, especially, that Memory Care services are an option for when (if) she reaches that point in her life. The entire facility appears to be well-maintained and clean. Every member of the staff with whom I came into contact was very friendly, welcoming and helpful, which was very much appreciated. (My mother has been very quick to accuse some staff members of theft. While I was there with my mother, I was amazed at the quality of care. She couldn't want for anything that wasn't provided her. She needed help hanging a picture? Someone came right up. She needed help with something else? A staff member was right there. Even the movers that Aegis provided her, who had to handle very large pieces of furniture, worked tirelessly to place everything just where she wanted it, including assembly of a gigantic bedroom set. The nurses that come to her apartment for her initial assessment were patient, understanding and kind. (This was a particularly difficult time for our mother, as our father had just passed away only 9 days before move in day.) My mother, however, complains that people show up at any time day or night and just come right in her apartment to check on her, or take out her garbage or, some other interruption that bothers her. My family and my brother and sister-in-law were treated to a lovely Mother's Day lunch on my last day staying with mom last year. The food was delicious, healthy and ample. The staff was kind and attentive. (My mother often complains about the Meals/Dining experience. She says the portions are too small (though she could probably simply ask for more), the hours are inconvenient (having to eat dinner by 5p annoys her). She doesn't (or at least didn't) enjoy the company of her tablemates with whom she (believes) was forced to dine each meal (apparently, she felt their conversation wasn't stimulating enough). She might have expressed this to someone in charge and had her table changed recently; I am unsure. I appreciated seeing the menus posted, which appeared to offer a good selection of dining options. I also thought the casual help-yourself coffee bistro in the lobby area which provides drinks and snacks is a very nice amenity. I am impressed by the number of daily activities offered at Aegis and the adorable movie theater on site. I often find myself encouraging my mother to participate in as many activities as possible, but she complains. Again, she is still grieving the loss of our father, to whom she was married almost 69 years and is often depressed. I believe she enjoys the movie theater, since acting is in her blood. She has been in the business in some capacity most of her life. Her general complaint about activities is based on the lack of interesting conversations amongst other residents. I think she wishes they were all more like her. It is difficult for me to assign a rating of the value of cost, as I have nothing to which to compare it. Unfortunately, assisted living is quite expensive and the one-time move-in fee at Aegis Granada Hills was exorbitant, at [fee removed]. That said, Aegis is the best place for Mom. She is cared for, safe, well-treated and close to family. I would definitely recommend Aegis Granada Hills. It remains family-owned and run since inception, which shows in the care. It is also a smaller facility, allowing for more personal attention.
