In Wyoming, the average monthly cost of assisted living is $3,980, which works out to be about $47,760 per year, according to A Place for Mom’s proprietary data.[01] This is lower than the national average cost of $4,753 per month, making Wyoming one of the more affordable states for assisted living. These fees include room and board at our partner communities, and may increase depending on level of care needs, location, apartment size and layout, and optional services.
Wyoming’s assisted living communities cost less than those in Colorado and Montana, and are more expensive than those in Utah and Idaho. Within the state, communities in the capital city of Cheyenne on the Colorado border, generally cost more than those in the rest of the state. In Cody, named for Buffalo Bill Cody, assisted living is about $300 less per month than the state’s average. The college town of Laramie also offers some savings over the state’s average.

In Wyoming, most families use a combination of private funds and public programs to cover the costs associated with assisted living. Because costs and eligibility can vary widely, it’s best to plan early to understand which payment options apply to your loved one’s situation. For an in-depth look at different payment options, visit our complete guide to paying for long-term care.
Private pay options are the most common way that families in Wyoming cover the cost of assisted living. These options include personal savings, income from retirement and investment accounts and from Social Security benefits. Other sources of private funds include the proceeds from selling a home and long-term care insurance.
Senior veterans and their surviving spouses may be eligible for veterans benefits from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) that can help offset the cost of assisted living. It’s a good idea to work with an accredited benefits counselor when seeking VA benefits, as the process can be complicated.
The Wyoming Veterans Commission operates several regional offices for veteran service officers (VSOs). Call 800-833-5987 or find a county-based VSO.
Medicaid is a program designed to support people who have low incomes and certain conditions and disabilities. It’s jointly funded by the federal and state governments, so Medicaid programs look a little different in each state. Wyoming Medicaid won’t pay for the room and board aspect of assisted living, but the state’s Aged, Blind and Disabled program can help pay for services that include, but aren’t limited to:[02]
The Community Choices Waiver (CCW), a home and community-based services (HCBS) waiver program, is also available in Wyoming for eligible residents. Covered services include skilled nursing, personal care, non-medical transportation, and more.[03]

Medicare is a federal health insurance program for seniors over 65 and younger people with certain conditions. Medicare doesn’t cover room and board or personal care services in assisted living but may help lower a senior’s overall bill by paying for some of the medically necessary aspects of care.[04]
The Wyoming State Health Insurance Program (WSHIP) connects seniors to more than 80 Medicare counselors throughout the state. For free, unbiased, and personalized guidance, call 800-856-4398 to speak with a benefits counselor.
In Wyoming, assisted living communities are licensed through the Department of Health, Office of Healthcare Licensing and Surveys. There are two levels of assisted living in the state:[05]
All assisted living communities are required to provide occasional help with personal care, infrequent mobility assistance, and limited incontinence care. These communities aren’t permitted to provide total assistance with dressing or bathing or frequent mobility assistance.[05] All communities are inspected at licensure and again on an annual basis or when there have been complaints.
Use the Wyoming Healthcare Facility Inspection Reports tool to find license status and inspection reports, or call 307-777-7123 to get a copy of a specific report.
State regulations — and a community’s track record with inspections and licensing — offer important insights into safety and quality of care in senior living communities.
Download the Guide to Senior Living Licensure and Inspection Reports to learn what to look for in inspection reports and what questions to ask when touring communities. This resource explains how to use state licensure and inspection information to evaluate a community’s compliance, care standards, and responsiveness to issues.
