Families in South Carolina typically pay for assisted living using a variety of sources, including income, savings, and public benefit programs. Because costs and eligibility can vary widely, it’s best to plan early to understand which payment options apply to your loved one’s situation. Below, we’ll explore a variety of public and private payment options available to South Carolina seniors. For further details about how families pay for senior care, explore our complete guide to paying for long-term care.
Private payment methods, such as pensions, retirement accounts, and Social Security benefits, are the most common methods of paying for assisted living. Long-term care insurance and life insurance policies are other options.
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) makes several benefit programs available to eligible veterans and their surviving spouses. Payments from these programs can be used to offset some of the costs of assisted living. If you or your loved one has questions about their eligibility or how to apply, contact a VA-accredited benefits counselor through the South Carolina Department of Veterans’ Affairs. Find a local office, call 803-734-0200, or send an email to va@scdva.sc.gov.

In South Carolina, assisted living communities are licensed as community residential care facilities (CRCF) by the Bureau of Healthcare Quality, a division of South Carolina’s Department of Public Health (DPH). The department oversees compliance and inspects communities before they’re licensed and on an annual basis. CRCFs must be licensed if they provide care for more than two people. [05]
South Carolina’s assisted living regulations address such issues as staff training, resident care standards, medication management, and safety procedures. These rules are designed to help protect residents and maintain high-quality care across communities.
While South Carolina doesn’t make inspection reports available online, you can determine a communities license status through the state’s health facility look-up tool.
State regulations — and a community’s track record with inspections and licensing — offer important insights into safety and quality of care in senior living communities.
