Smaller, clean, high quality facility with many amenities

When we first toured this community we were very excited about it. The Director was fantastic and really worked with us during the admissions process. Shortly after moving my loved one in, the Director left. I wouldn't necessarily say that we're dissatisfied with the facility now. My loved one really likes the other residents and most of the staff. But overall the facility has come down a few notches since the Director left. The one thing we are frustrated about is the recent rate increase. It seems higher than reasonable for an annual increase. Communication with the family is fair, but we have had a few things come up that we weren't told about when they occurred and that was disappointing. However, it's still a high quality facility. Cleanliness is good, both resident living areas and the common areas. The food is pretty good, but quality and variety is lacking at times. They have a good variety of activities and outings. They've done a really good job of including my loved one and getting her to be more active. I would recommend them to family and friends, depending on what they were looking for. If you're looking for a smaller yet high quality place with many amenities that are equal to what a larger facility offers, this could be a good fit.

Too expensive for the return

My folks have been living there a few months. Its new and clean and beautiful but they have constant staff turnover, the food is mediocre and some of the help is young and inexperienced. They are definitely nice people but they oversell their services. I don't know if its because they're not fully occupied, but many of the planned activities have only 1-2 participants and I can see how people could be lonely and bored there. Its also predominantly women residents. It's overpriced for what you get.

Look elsewhere

We have had some issues here. Ultimately, we chose this facility because it fit our budget, seemed like a good place, and they offer Memory Care as well (thinking long term, incase mom needs that later on). They also have PT and OT in house, which is very helpful and convenient. We're paying extra for special care/assistance that mom needs and the staff isn't always responsive when she calls for it. The main one being assistance to and from the restroom. We've met with the Director about it 3 times and each time we've been told that things will improve. Things do improve for a couple of days and then we're back to square one. We've just been really concerned about her being able to get to the bathroom on time. One time, she had called for assistance for a restroom visit and ended up having an accident because she waited so long. She felt terrible and apologized to the aide that she had to clean it up. The aide told her, next time just to keep on/soil her Depends and that they'd change it for her as soon as they could. Also, we're concerned with medications and them being given at the correct time. Sometimes they're delayed. Honestly, if mom could afford a different facility, we would move her. They oversold us. Their brochure is misleading. For example, it advertises gourmet meals, which is not the case. A lot of the food that they serve is not very healthy or good quality. We're trying our best to get things improved for mom so that we don't have to put her through another transition. I'm concerned for some of the residents who aren't verbal and/or don't have family there to advocate for them. I've even told the director that. I will say, the director is receptive when we bring up our concerns. It's the follow through that's the problem. I would not recommend them to friends and family.

Lacking

When I talk to my friend, she tells me she's bored. They offer bingo and exercises, but in general, I don't feel they offer enough for seniors to do. During the touring process, we were under the impression they had more outings and events, and they do not. I don't hear her complain about the care though.

Good Place, but not ideal for our family needs

Our situation was a little bit more specific as far as needs, but I would definitely recommend Sunrise of Fullerton as an option for other families. My mom was downstairs on the main level and dad was upstairs in memory care. Both of them preferred to stay in their rooms instead of engaging or being active in the community, especially mom. I was hoping to see the staff try to get her out of her room and active more often, but I also understand that's an individual request and they could only do so much. They definitely had activity options downstairs, it was just hard to get my mom engaged in them. I think memory care could have more activities available, though. My sisters have several friends who have parents there and they are super happy with it. I felt the facility was very clean and laundry services were prompt and always good. Dining was good. I ate there with my parents a few times and it was always good. Overall, this really is a good place and I would recommend it to other families. It just wasn't the best fit for our parents and their needs.

Painful

Listening the recorded sales pitch while on hold as I've done now countless times over the years is quite painful! Often this long wait ends with "I'm sorry, she can't speak to you now." I can get through to my mother only about one out of five attempts.

Community Tour

Oakmont of Santa Clarita didn’t seem as down to earth as the place we chose.

Westmont of Milpitas review

We like the facilities here, they are newer and clean. We also like the kind demeanor of the staff members. However they could work to better their communication specifically regarding medication and health care in general. They also could improve their communication throughout the community.

Oakmont is a great environment if you are fairly independent and don't need increased care

My moms condition changed very shortly after we arrived, so it changed some circumstances for us. If you need information about the proposed charges for level of care, get that in writing up front. In my case they kept putting it off and I couldn't find anyone with that information. So, our cost for care doubled within the first month, even from a verbal estimate. They told me it would be max of [price removed]. They reassessed after 2 weeks and it was then [price removed], just for the level of care. I wasn't given any advance warning, which was inconsistent with their contract that they had me sign. So, the main thing is to know their cost up front before u agree to anything - it's all about level of care. Oakmont is a great environment if you are fairly independent and don't need increased care from their ala carte menu. It seemed to be a nice community, but my mom was on the cusp of needing more care and they weren't even showing up to give her that care. I found that concerning, especially for that price. Often times she'd be sitting in her room waiting for someone to come get her, and most times they wouldn't. She'd push her call button and they weren't showing up. For someone who needs more care it wasn't a good experience overall.

Good Staff, Need More Follow Through

This community is clean modern, and nice. The staff doesn't have a lot of follow through, and there is no response to calls or emails from management. There is no ability to get to the right person. The medical technical room are very responsive. Some of the hiccups in the beginning could have been avoided if there was a care meeting in person at the beginning of my loved one's stay. The food is unappetizing for the residents and really bland. Overall the community is short on staffing, and the community knows it. Medication management, and bathing are a few of the care items the community is able to assist my loved one with. They do a good job. Changing of linens, the room, basic cable, housekeeping, all utilities, and three meals a day are included in the monthly rate. The activities director is amazing! The residents have lots of activities to choose from to participate in, if they would choose too.

My tour review

This tour was good, we were referred by someone we knew that was close with the tour guide. This community was fine but there was no outdoor courtyard. This was one of the first places we toured for our loved one.
