A Place for Mom has scored Juniper Communities with 8.5 out of 10 using our proprietary review score based on 186 reviews in the last 2 years. Over all time, Juniper Communities has 931 reviews with an average "overall experience" of 4.2 out of 5.
I have a loved one that has been at Juniper for a few weeks. While some of the staff is good, they are GROSSLY understaffed. Pain meds are not brought in a timely manor, it sometimes takes multiple days to get a shower, and the food quality is dreadful! When she has had a shower, staff was a little too aggressive due to her existing back pain issues, it has deterred her from showering. We have had at least 3 discussions with admin about having her food cut into bite size portions, and it still doesn’t happen. I would say at least with our experience, it has been borderline neglect! And with the high cost, I would NOT recommend if your loved one needs a lot of help.

I would tell others looking into Juniper Village at Williamstown that you need to go every day and check on your family member and stay on top of them. The care was awful unless I requested some thing then they did it. PA was horrible. Even then the nurse was not very professional. I was not happy at all my father went downhill very fast in the time that he was there. He sadly past after six weeks. He was prescribed hydrochlorothiazide by his cardiac doctor in November, and they refused to give it to him. We paid for my fathers wash to be done. It was supposed to be done weekly and it wasn't. I don't think he was getting showered at all. I put two bars of soap in his bathroom. The day he moved in and they were never touched. I bought brand, new towels and washcloths put them in his closet, and they were never used only one rag, and one towel the entire time he lived there he was never shaved. I had to shave him every two days. He gets no more tears over the counter drops three times a day. It took me a month before the physician assistant prescribed it so he could hardly open his eyes. And the week before he died they prescribed him and medicine for his mood, which basically made him lethargic and I told them it was too strong. They need to lower the dose and he died a couple days later. The nurse [name removed] told me that my father was pampered and that when I'm not around, he's basically running through the hallways the last two weeks he couldn't even walk. He was being pushed on his walker that has a seat. He was so weak even the physical therapist from Virtua called me with concerns. Said he puts on an act for me. Very upsetting that people don't care anymore.

If you want your loved one to sit in their BM for over an hour, to get a bed sore while in their cate and then beg for care, wait for more than 30 minutes to get help - then this is the place for you. They show a good side, but the reality is a lot of neglect and lack of care. Do not send your loved ones to this horrible place.

Juniper VIllage had our loved ones medications wrong, and there was just an overwhelming feeling of negligence going on. Instead of this community bringing our loved one to and from meals, and the few activities they had, they told us we needed to hire an aid for that.

I went to pack my loved one to move her to a new community. My loved one's room had bed bugs in it due to another resident having bed bugs in this their room. The community called me and let me know that they would wash their belongings and move my loved one to a new room. Brookdale ended up throwing all my loved one's furniture away. Brookdale decided to throw most of my loved one's personal belongings (shampoo, soap, phone charger, etc.) away. The community found my loved one's clothes in another room and they had to go buy them a new pair of shoes. I spoke to the person in charge, and they provided no apology or explanation. I called the corporate office, and the person that answered the phone said someone will get back to you. However, due to the many complaints we have received it may be a while. I waited a bit, and called back a second time. I let the corporate office that if I have to call a third time it would be a call from my lawyer. My family and I feel this was cruel. I called Brookdale again, and they said we already spoke, and what else do you want. I let the corporate office know that I wanted more information.

We walked in one day into my mothers bedroom, and it was a complete mess. Her bandages weren't changed at all. The staff was okay, and the administrator was awful. The amount of money we were paying to have her at this community was not worth it. For thanksgiving all my mother had to eat was a salad. The food was not good at all. House keeping was not so great either, my mother was wearing clothes that weren't hers. They say they had activities for the residents but they do not,the only thing they had was a guy come in on Sundays to sing a couple of songs. The rooms were a nice size, we liked the way it was laid out. They were understaffed in the dementia unit that they would gather everyone into a room and make them stay there so they could keep eyes on everyone at the same time.

My mother has been living there for five years. At this point, all I want to do is get her out. When my mother could do everything herself, it was a decent place to live. Once you have to rely on the staff, you get subquality care. They don't know what they are doing. They give the wrong medications (which my mother caught, thank goodness). They ignore residents for long periods of time, refuse services, etc. They are definitely understaffed. Cost is exorbitant and rises constantly. Very poor overall.

I was very excited to recommend the Harbour to one of my clients family. Went for a tour and their daughter was very happy with what she had seen and was told. I am a CNA and had gone to the Harbour on many visits with home health agencies. I had given a very high recommendation . We were told we would be put on list. So as weeks went by we called to see how things were going. We were told they would have a room soon , more time goes by still nothing. Finally I called and spoke with a representative of the facility and was told should not be much longer that there would be a room soon situation was told to me I will not post that. Well as we waited no calls no notifications . Told to contact Sunrise of the South Hills same treatment. Very disappointed with the way the Harbor handle this matter. Would not recommend again..

I went to this place on [date removed] as a walk in requested a tour of the building for my father. The girl at the front desk told me that there was an Easter event going on and the manager was busy and I needed to call her to reschedule. My family and I were in a crunch taking that my father was being discharged from rehab on Monday. After hearing such great things about your facility that was a major let down. I will also mention that I never got a call from the manager. We did find placement for our father at a nearby facility where the manager came in on her day off to accommodate us. So if you are planning on going here for a tour make sure you schedule prior because walk-ins are not welcomed.

It was 2 years ago December 1st when my mother died at this facility. I haven’t been able to talk about it much less write about what happened until now. NEVER check into a facility like this over a weekend or holiday. Better yet, do EVERYTHING you can to keep your loved one at home and out of this or any other “home”. We checked my mother in on the Friday after Thanksgiving 2015. That holiday weekend – there were literally 2 people working per shift. Of the 2 people – there was one skilled nurse and one caregiver that changed bedding etc. for ALL of the patients & that place stays occupied. The skilled nurse dispensed meds to all of the patients which during normal working hours - there is a full-time person that does nothing but dispense drugs. I’m not sure how many skilled nurses work during a normal shift, nor do I know how many other caregivers are there. All I know is there were only 2 people there. The skilled nurse was busy dispensing medications to all of the patients. I stayed with her for several hours each day over that weekend. I went in on Monday morning and she was sitting in a wheelchair in front of the desk where the staff has to use computers etc. Her head was down on her chest & she was OUT. Unconscious. I don’t know how she could even breath. When I asked them what was going on, was told “they were “watching” her.” She had rheumatoid arthritis for years and had a stroke which caused aphasia before going in. This is a woman who could barely sit for half an hour without being in pain & they had her propped up in that chair head on her chest. I rolled her back down to her bed and got her in it. Shortly after I got her settled, a contract person came in to draw blood. She could not get a drop out of her. She was dehydrated & had low blood pressure. The contractor went back to the desk & I followed while she told a person at that desk. They put her on fluids via IV. I had to leave and my sister went to see her later that evening after I left. She was still “out of it & restless”. She died later that night. They found her at about 2:00 am and she was “unresponsive”. Wouldn’t a skilled nurse be able to tell that someone is on their deathbed? And maybe tell their loved ones? I don’t know if they called a doctor, it was too late regardless. These places are just a “holding pen” for old people until they die. My mothers’ “roommate” was in a wheelchair next to her bed with her head down on the bed. I asked if she needed help, she asked me to get someone. She had been waiting for help changing her wet bed. There were people hollering down the hall asking for help. It was horrible. I can’t even think about my mothers’ “comfort” before she died. It was the worst experience I’ve ever had or been around. It haunts me every day. I urge you to do everything you can to avoid these places. They are pure hell. You wouldn’t believe how the hospital treated her before that. I’m not a medical professional, but pray to god you never have to go into care if you don’t have an advocate with you.
