Not for everyone

This probably isn't a fair review. My sister only lasted there three days. She was so depressed and didn't fit in that a close family friend offered to take her in, with the help of hospice. She had just survived a hospice center and we were trying to keep her improving. The staff was exceptionally friendly and helpful, but the other residents were too depressing. She was so much more advanced than the other residents were that we were afraid she would regress. Unfortunately, my first impression of this place was correct: depressing.

Good overall, but had some bad experiences

My loved one was not here long, due to a few issues, but from what we saw during her short stay they do a good job with the care overall. The staff are friendly, they keep the place clean, and the care they provide is good. The issue we had was that we did not know that the memory care patients were mixed in with the assisted living residents, and having residents with such severe care needs in close proximity was just too big a shock for a woman who had been living in her own home for so long. We also had an issue where although she gave a month notice when she decided to move out, they claimed she did not and tried to charge her for an extra month. It took 4 months of fighting it, even with the some of the staff arguing on our side, to get that charge refunded.

Seeking Assisted Living Care--Tour experience at Emeritus

I am seeking Assisted Living care for a family member, and we just had a tour at Emeritus in Canton, Ohio. The facility is very nice and I can tell the residents are treated to a lot of activities. The accommodations are also nice, and it helps that all of the rooms can be personalized to make it into your loved ones new home. However, I must say that our tour seemed a lot like buying a car. I forget the exact title of the representative we worked worth, but I will refer to this individual as our "tour guide." After seeing a few rooms, our tour guide mentioned putting a deposit down several times, which was awkward. I was also asked to sign a waiver to allow my family member's medical records to be released to the on-staff nurse so she could review the level of care that is needed, to which I politely refused. The room price negotiation also came into play, which again, was awkward. We simply wanted a tour and some information. We are planning to see a total of 8 places before we make a final decision. We want to make the best decision we can for our family member, but Emeritus gave me the feeling that we needed to sign on the dotted line right away. Our tour guide wanted to follow-up with me the very next morning, and I explained we had a few people we needed to talk with, so I did not want to be contacted until the following Monday. However, the very next morning I received a phone call from the Director thanking us for taking the tour. Everything here seems a little forced. None of the other places we've toured so far have been this "sales-focused" and I would go as far as saying "desperate." I am now a little bit hesitant to even consider this place. If my wishes were not honored regarding the phone call situation, it doesn't give me high hopes that my loved-ones wishes will be honored either. It's also somewhat alarming that there is no wait-list at Emeritus, where as other facilities are booked. I say all of this from a touring perspective. In no way does my tour reflect the quality of care and overall operations of the home. Just be prepared to feel like you're buying a car when you just want to look around.

When you walk in you immediately walk into their living space where they hang out and watch tv and the room was literally filled with peopel. Then there's this octagonal room and off of that there were 4 seperate wing, the set up was very confusing. I would see how people there would get confused as to where their room was. They had some staff there that appeared very questionable. Some had no teeth, they were unkempt, no friendly smiles and there was an older. They told me it would be much nicer about they did renovations, but the staff is very important to me

The community didn’t smell all that great.

When I toured this community it was an Emeritus. I just was not impressed that it was two different floors and they had an elevator but my loved one needed extra assistance. With dementia operating an elevator… you’re lucky if you can operate a door. The community didn’t smell all that great. just wasn’t a nice community. The one side of the building had a view of office buildings. It was kind of like a used car lot with them trying to bargain

Our Family's Experience

To be fair -- my evaluation is low in many critical areas based on my mother's experience & my interaction with staff based on her care needs being ignored. The facility is beautiful; I met people who had lived there for 2-4 years & were very satisfied with it. My assessment is that it was not a good placement for mom. In their initial evaluation of mom's condition, I asked if they were able to care for a person who could not do anything for herself physically. They assured me they had patients in worse condition. However Mom had to wait hours after calling for help; the aides (sweet gals) did not know how to move someone who could not stand on her own. She did not get a shower during the month she was there, because the aides did not know how to help her. In trying to move her, they reinjured her leg. She had to be transported to the hospital twice because of developing wounds & sepsis. When I discovered her infection (I could smell it from the hallway), they said oh maybe that's why there was blood on her sheets. They had to change sheets too many times so that the morning I'm referring to, mom was lying on a plastic coated mattress. The antibiotic treatment to treat the sepsis at the hospital was such that she developed fluid in her lungs, & congestive heart failure. Only the grace of God brought her through. I do think the facility is a very nice community for those who don't need nursing care. It is unfortunate they didn't realize their limitations in providing the kind of care my mom needed. My evaluation would have been much better had mom only needed an assisted living community. We loved the dining experience there- food was very tasty, the dining area was cheery, bright, & lovely view looking out the many windows. There were a variety of daily activities for those who were well enough to participate. They need to be realistic in identifying those persons who will benefit from living at Aviva Hills & be honest in knowing those they can help & those they are not equipped to help.

The staff was outsourced on weekends and wore hair extensions and extremely long nails ,they were uneducated and rude. They stole a giftcard I received out of the envelope so when I picked up the mail it was empty. The food was not that good and I spoke with others that were unhappy there. I was also informed of a video incident that took place there that was quite apalling. I would never recommend that place to anyone at best I give it a 2 at best. Elder care needs improvement!

I would not recommend as I have moved my Dad to another facility. They could improve on watching their residents, as my father was found almost a mile away from the center soaking wet in a ditch gone for 3 hours when they knew I was coming, better oversight, making sure the residents are clean and not walking around in soiled clothing and pants.

It appears to be a nice area, definitely needs improvement.

The meals good from what I see, but I don't know about the activities I do not seem them. Charging for memory care, but giving assisted living care. They promised me that they would do daily hygiene care morning and evening and help with changing clothes for bedtime. This usually never happens. Our loved one sleeps in their clothing from what they wore for the day. It's just sad. I had high hopes for better care for them, but it didn't happen.

It's True: You Can't Judge A Book By Its Cover!

When we toured and researched Aviva, everything seemed wonderful. The Marketing/Sales Director who has since left the Property did a great job telling us about what a community should be. Unfortunately, Aviva did not live up to the presentation. With only one exception, nothing was as it seemed. That one exception, thank goodness, is the quality of healthcare. As for the other aspects...? Apartment size is small and cramped. Operationally, this community is very challenged. One of the two elevators broke down, and it took a very long time to get it fixed. Also slow to come out was the communication to the residents about it being broken. When a resident is pained walking Ang going up and down stairs, an elevator should be a priority. The food service is lacking significantly, it's not that tasty, the portions are incredibly small, and everything in the menu ends up not being available in short order. The waitstaff has issues too, with many times only one person around to serve all of the tables. My MIL says that the activities that are planned aren't that inspiring. She doesn't like playing bingo, and the concerts that are supposed to take place on site are more like practices. Also, most people don't go to the planned activities on site. Furthermore, while she met several lovely people (residents), she found that for the most part, people just walked around like zombies not really engaging. She found it very depressing. Several community managers left the employ of the community in the short 6 months that we were trying it out. Thank goodness we had that trial period so we didn't have to move my MIL there permanently. She was beside herself living there for even more than 3 months; very unhappy. I wish it had been better; we were so hopeful. I hope that management gets their act together for the friends that are still living there.

Not what we needed

Mom is 95 years of age and had broken the femur of her right leg in 2 places and was non-weight bearing on that leg for 8 weeks following surgery. There is a beautiful lounge area the residents could enjoy. The dining room was very impressive with windows all around, looking out onto a landscaped area and a fountain on a pond. The director was pleasant enough. I asked if she thought it, being assisted living, would be a good fit for my mother who would need a lot of assistance as she couldn’t stand by herself. She assured me they had round the clock nursing care. Mom developed pressure wounds from no one checking her skin under the brace. She was hospitalized 2 times with sepsis. It is a beautiful, great community for those who need minimal assistance. The nursing care was not adequate for someone in mom’s condition nor were the caregivers trained to assist mom in transferring nor in helping her shower. Therefore she did not get a shower nor bed bath the 30 days she was there.
