Care could be better

There have been a number of gaps in care. It took multiple conversations and follow ups to hopefully have gotten things right. They also failed to file to proper paperwork with the right insurance company for the long term care insurance, even after repeat conversations. After 6 months, and the issues we have had, the were nice enough to raise the rent by about 8%. On the positive side, our mom is happy, making friends and loves her apartment. The facility is nice and doesn’t feel like an institution or hospital. The staff all know her and have been most have been very helpful to her. If our mom wasn’t so happy, because of the business side of things, we probably would have moved her, but she is happy and don’t want to upset her at this point.

A community for care.

We toured this community for my mom's care. The staff was very helpful and the community was clean. They had a nice variety of activities for the residents. We liked knowing the community was clean. We needed something closed. We would recommend this community for families to tour for the care of a loved one.

Care for family

We toured this community for care for family. We liked the community but it did not have the feeling that we were looking for. It is clean and and the staff members are very caring. They had a nice variety of meals and activities that would be offered. It needs a more comfy effect for enjoyment. Families need to tour this community for the care of a loved one

Good care, overall

The care has been good overall, it seems about the same as most places of this type, not really outstanding in any way. I do appreciate that they've been good about communication, and always get in touch quickly if any issues come up. However, I've heard fairly regular complaints from my loved one and others who live in the facility about the food, so some improvements could definitely be made there.

Our experience with Aviva West Hartford

I am lukewarm on the community and am moving her by the end of the month as her husband passed away, moving her closer to me. The aides that work on her floor seem very nice. Services they say they provide on a weekly basis such as housekeeping rarely happen without prodding. The intake process was not dealt with well and I had to put them up in a hotel room at the last minute before being allowed to move them in. Sales put a good spin on things that didn't really pan out once we got there.

Cautiously optimistic

My wife has not been overly accepting of the staff. Some are more successful with handling her resistance than others. At times she seems to be comfortable and resolved but she can be very upset (crying and mad). I knew it is a hard job, but I do expect the staff to be trained for her better than I am.

What we didn't expect

The facility staff present to be warm and welcoming until you become a resident and they then become very antagonistic. This especially holds true for the director of program events. Oftentimes she makes residents uncomfortable and feel unwelcome to participate in activities. Charging fees for rides to doctors appointments and the like but failing to inform the resident about the fee until after she has taken them to their appointment. What happens if the resident doesn't have any extra money after paying the rising cost of their monthly rent. It's really sad they are treated in this manner.

Our family experience, overall good community with some improvements to communication and meals.

Initially we had very good contact but now difficult to contact anyone to get issues resolved. When it comes to the meals and dining there is not much of a selection or a variety to choose from. There is also not enough activities for the residents.

A new directive is bringing good changes

The response time and most of the aides are very patience. Also food and activities are good. They have transportation for no extra cost. Since my mom is in a wheelchair, that's very important to me. The security is also worth mentioning as good at night. Most of the aides are very good, but at 95, an aide can't rush or be rough with my mom. One definitely is. I bought Mom six new gowns and 4 have disappeared and no one can locate them. I think the food is good for an industrial kitchen. She enjoys most of it. A couple of aides are very good about bringing her hot chocolate everyday. There are a lot of activities, but Mom never leaves her room. She's pretty much wheelchair bound now. Unfortunately, most of the time, the response time is too long. There have been times she has waited more than three hours to respond. She has resorted to calling the desk at times. I'm still looking for a house and can't bring her to my daughter's because there are 13 steps to get in and that's impossible now. This is our first experience like this. I'm not sure if I'm being too critical or just a concerned daughter. Aviva is reported to be the best facility around, so for now, I'll keep her there. The executive director is new and I'm sure she'll get a handle on things. She's very competent and friendly.

Review for Aviva Hills

The nurses and medical group are great. They have great special activities for the residents. The facility is very clean and pretty. The administration staff is very disorganized and there seems to be a lot of turnover. They also don't return calls. The helpers at meals are not very engaged and seem unhappy in their positions. I feel Aviva has some very positive qualities but there is much room for improvement in the areas I listed. Not sure I would recommend them at the current state.

Disappointed

The one thing we're not happy about is that they charge $5 to get a room tray delivered to someone's room. My uncle has dementia and he doesn't realize he is being charged even though I keep telling him. He had an extra $250 charge on his bill last month. I keep trying to tell him to go down but he forgets. When it was the Landing we were not charged for this. Plus the prices have gone up twice since they took over. Should not have redecorated also since it had just been done. Older people generally like very traditional surroundings not modern. Waste of money.

Aviva Maybelle Carter review

Well my mother is still there . They have done some remodeling which helped to improve things. They have consistent activities so that's nice too. The biggest complaint from my moma is the food!! Repetitive meals, greasy food, and inexperience cooks (constant position turnover in the kitchen). I actually plan on reaching out to them to ask what going on with the meals. They are going up about [fee removed] ion the rent at the first of the year so we'll be looking for somewhere else soon!

Deficiencies in memory care unit, with strong staff needing more support

Though the assisted living seemed fine, it was not the best place for memory care and Alzheimer's. There was not enough staff, lack of activities, and their care for incontinence was not good. There were difficulties getting information from the director and the promised medical staff on site every week almost never occurred. Communication was lacking, but in regards to my concerns my loved ones care team were responsive. In the end it was difficult to get full information for her transfer, but we did get it. It could have been better, but we weren't there long-term. The lack of staff was the biggest problem. Her care team were wonderful, sweet, and caring. I never worried about her safety in that way, but I don't think it's as specialized towards Alzheimer's and it needs a greater level of care. I cant speak highly enough about the people and the techs in her unit. They were absolutely wonderful people who did so much, but I don't think the system was setup as well as it could have been. I could see myself wanting to be there for assisted living, but memory care was the problem. It's also important to mention that at the time, she was extremely difficult. She had a lot of aggression problems and it may have been a lot more than what they could deal with, especially without a doctor coming in. For other people it may be a good fit, but for us it was difficult with her advanced Alzheimer's.
