A Place for Mom has scored Agemark with 7.6 out of 10 using our proprietary review score based on 111 reviews in the last 2 years. Over all time, Agemark has 334 reviews with an average "overall experience" of 4.4 out of 5.
What does "experience so far" mean? I moved my husband out of The Terraces in May. Thus, ending "the experience". After 6 weeks of observation, I concluded, that my husband was constantly depressed. My husband is a "level one" which translates to, he can do self-care without assistance from staff. The new director always made sure he stopped and said "hello". He would always say, "how are you doing today 'young man'? My husband is 81, he knows he's not a young man. The daily greeting like that seems like a constant stream of bs. The director would also say, "I've got a job for you , [name removed]" but he never said what the job was. My husband has memory issues, but he is not suffering from any mental [profanity removed]. The director, according to my husband, seems more like a desperate used car salesman, eager to make the sale. My husband's assessment of that person is that he is so artificial. My husband was in law-enforcement for nearly forty years. He's been a pretty good judge of character, sometimes his life depended on it. The disingenuous "meet & greet" everyday was, of course, ridiculous. Most of us can sift through encounters with ppl who seem less than "straight-forward", so you probably know exactly what I am describing. The Terraces has dark wood every where, the rooms are dark, without much daylight. My husband was bored and depressed. The food was nothing spectacular, dinner often consists of a half of a sandwich and a handful of potato chips. For $[removed]per month? The Terraces is not a $[removed] per year operation, definitely. Staff is friendly and helpful, but in numbers that didn't seem adequate. Too many quit while we were there for the six+weeks. In that short amount of time, I paid about "$[removed]" (too much). I moved my husband to [removed], and from day one, it has been a positive experience. The amount of light, the bright colors, the happy staff, everything is in the positive column here. The gardens here are lovely and interesting. Plenty of daylight and happy colors. I wish I had brought him to the [removed] first. I would have saved a lot of money, he'd have gotten better care, consistently, and generally a less stressful experience, if I had only discovered the [removed] FIRST!

I realize all assisted living facilities charge a lot, but in no way is the cost substantiated by the services received. Food options were poor and contained very little nutrition, akin to middle school lunches. Mom barely ate while there. Trash was supposed to be collected every evening but often wasn't picked up for days. Staff was very nice, but turnover was incredibly high which made it hard on everyone.

They've been in the process of renovating since we toured in October. The Memory Care manager is delightful. Care staff is a hit and miss, med staff marginally English-speaking that is if I can figure out who is med staff. I found out some of the best staff were contracted or agency and Astoria let them go at the end of December. Some staff seem to have favorite residents with whom they spend more time. The food has been all over the place. At times, not enough sent to memory care so staff had to decide how to ration. It is better now, but I sense a distinctly higher quality for assisted living than what is sent to memory care. Some items very impractical for people 90+ years to eat. The activities have been good and that is because there were many entertainment events in December. Now, not much at all. Sitting in front of a large screen tv is not socializing. I rated the value for cost at a 1 and that is because we were promised so much, signed contract and paid money, but not finding what was promised AND price was raised immediately.

Overall, I think there was an ok effort. My dad can be difficult. Room was really nice. They overestimated how much of my dad's medical care they could manage. My dad is a full assist and I could see the staff irritated with his needs. Ultimately my dad needed much more medical care than he was able to get in the assisted living environment.

We toured Astoria at Oakdale during our search for an Assisted Living facility for our loved one. This facility was very friendly. It was a very small and homey atmosphere. However, the rocks out to the backyard were a concern for my loved one in his wheelchair.

Based on our experience with Astoria Senior Living, they are way over priced. The hidden fees and additional costs are never explained. The billing is confusing even for a CPA. Cannot afford to move my parent and begin the 2 year private pay requirement over again.

We chose Trevista because it was the most convenient to where we live. The room sizes here are very nice and spacious. They give residents a menu and you write down what you want, they do not pay attention to it what so ever. The portion sizes here are very small, so we always have to buy her extra food. They have a policy that anything over the counter her doctor has to approve it or they wont give it to her which has caused some issues. They had covid under control until recently, they have had 2 people running around without a mask and coughing and now over 20 people are sick. There were 3 occasions where we dropped things off to her and it was stolen. I would not recommend this facility to anybody right now.

Unfortunately, my Father no longer lives here. We loved the facility, but they truly aren’t equipped or staffed to handle Frontal Temporal Dementia. They couldn’t check on him as often as needed or manage the level of care he requires. It is a shame that care facilities “triage and assess” potential residents and assures the family that the care they provide will care for your ailing family member. I will commend the staff here for fully refunding the amount we paid for Dad’s one month there.

We thought Brighton Gardens was going to be a great place. Hotel wise it is, it's beautiful, and the food is good, but the care is seriously lacking. It's just not what they said it was going to be. There is a lack of follow up and follow through. The assessment process may not be ideal either. Things have not panned out to be the way, I feel they were presented. I am starting to see improvements, but it has not been a great initial experience.

Thought Kay was very good and knowledgeable. Facility felt older than it's 14 years. For some reason did not like that memory care on 3rd floor via elevator. Westmont and The Commons 1st floor facilities. Most expense of 3 visited and had a medication management fee which other two did not mention. Will have to double check on that. Decent online reviews.

Our friend was just in the assisted care. We feel that things might have been different if she was in the special care unit for dementia. In assisted care they expect them to take care of themselves basically but by then she was really beyond that point. They only cleaned her room once a week and when food was spilled on the floor they didn't clean it up. I know that really wasn't their job because she wasn't in special care but we felt that they should have kept it cleaner. cypress was actually financially really good for us but it was just at the point where she needed more care. She shouldn't have been there as long as she was. The special care unit was too pricey for us so we moved her.

I was so excited when I learned my father was going to be placed here. Now I am crying as I write this. Although we are paying for services I haven’t seen one person check on him. It’s been three hours. The place is a ghost town after 5pm. When I went to ask for help, the care giver was on her cell phone and didn’t acknowledge me. She then stated she’s the only one on the floor and it’s not even her floor. It breaks my heart to think that if my father falls (and he has) that he’s on the floor until someone finds him. Pretty much a staff member confirmed that’s the case. Where is the dignity in that? Where is the service for the money we’re paying? Where’s the care? I thought this place would be different, but I see that it’s not. At least not for the Memory Care Floor.

Before you decide to move here ask for additional cost. You can quickly go from the base price to twice or even more. Seems the "assisted" part will cost you more! They refuse to tell you what they are charging you for when they double or even more each month. To be able to live here and to keep the base price you to have no help of any kind. And the will bill you monthly for giving you your required prescriptions. [amount removed]a month even if it one or two prescriptions, and even it over the counter! That is not counting the cost of your drugs they obtain from a local company that supplies your presciptions. Also, if you are ill, or having loose bowels, etc., you have to go down to the dining room or be charged [fee removed] for each meal they bring to your room. In other words you can be on your " death bed" and you are suppose to Get out of you get and go down to the dining room! All in all they will find ways with excuses to increase your bill. Ask them to itemize their charges. Good luck!

I placed my husband here at Country House in Elkhorn on Jan 10, 2022. Its very new and well kept and the staff was very kind. But the cares that were promised did not happen from the beginning. He has edema in his legs , therefore leg wraps needed to be put on every day and edema pumps were to be on his legs for an hour a day. This did not happen for at least two weeks. He was to be cued to go to the restroom and I never saw that occur (and I was there most days for long periods of time.) nor did any of his visitors witness this. Joe did like it okay , always wanted to go home, but I think that was a normal reaction. The most compelling reason for our decision to find another facility was the significant increase in cost over a one month period. So we gave notice on Feb 11, 2022 and moved him as soon as I could research and visit other facilities and make a decision. And also I reached out to AGEMARK, the corporation that owns CH , never a call back. That’s inexcusable!!!
