Need to put more effort into the dementia area.

All of the nurses that I love have either left in the past couple of months or are retiring in a few months. They are the main reason that I have left my Mother at Paramount. There have been some senior staff changes in the last few months (and they opened the skilled nursing section about the same time) and the place is not as nice as it was when my Mom moved in over a year ago. There are seldom any activities for the residents in the dementia area - they are often short-staffed so most of the staff are merely trying to get the residents fed and to the bathroom. They used to do more crafts, manicures, have monthly entertainment come in, went out to lunch at a restaurant monthly, and had snacks on Saturday afternoons. Now they barely manage bingo. It's depressing to see the residents just sitting in the halls looking at each other, especially when Paramount has raised the rates twice this year and there is no improvement in the level of care to justify the increase. I feel like the dementia residents are treated much differently than the other residents.

Not An Ideal Room

I thought they were a nice facility. The price was not a fit for us and the layout of the room was not what we wanted. The rooms appeared to have no medical assistance. Rh facility was clean and odor free.

Need Better Communication!!

When i came for a tour of the community i was promised many things. At the moment i have been having a hard time trying to get services done for my loved one from the community. When i ask something to be done they just leave me hanging this is what i have been feeling. The community is nice and its clean. I really wish the staff would communicate much better.

Mixed experience

We've had somewhat of a mixed experience with Emeritus at Wilburn Gardens. The facility itself looks nice enough, and now that our loved one has settled in she is getting to like the staff. For the most part they are friendly and caring. However there are a lot of areas they could stand to improve. Our loved one hasn't had anything good to say about the food, and she also complains about the lack of scheduling and communication from the staff regarding activities.

Residents didn't Have a Spark

I thought that the policies were good. It generally sounded like a good place. I work in the carpentry field and the maintenance was not good, though. Paint didn't look so crisp, etc. The people were all in wheelchairs - it didn't seem like they were living life to the best of their ability. They didn't seem to have as much of a spark to them. It is a multistory unit and you had to use an elevator, which I didn't like.

what i thought of Paramount

This facility was nice at the beginning but each month they raised the price for one reason or another. He had to room with a man who tried to keep the heat at 86 degrees. there were several issues we tried to get this fixed but it was not fixed. We had several items misplaced and I had to go and find them. The food was wonderful and some of the staff were very nice. I would not recommend

Care and concern

We were not very happy with the assistance that we received from this community. They are nice, but they seem to be very slow at responding to her needing help. The staff at times take too long. The staff does not help her with ordering her meals at meal time. This community is clean. They offer her to do activities, but she is not active. We have concerns on the increasing the amount financially for the cost of her care. We would suggest that other families tour this community for the care and the value to make sure that they are getting what they are paying for.

Issues

Wilburn must be the only place on the east coast without WIFI. It was very frustrating moving in to discover a week long wait for TV hook up and then have such a limited channel selection. And to learn that getting WIFI would ultimately cost $50 a month for the Comcast contract. There was a lot of confusion about medications and I'm still not confident that it's been solved. It took 6 hours to receive a requested med. The second night of my sister's stay, she fell going to the bathroom. She pressed her pendant many times before resorting to screaming loudly for help. She lay on the floor for an hour. The food is terrible. Powdered eggs or rice krispies for breakfast. No fruit.

If it were up to me, my relative would be elsewhere

Best suited for the individual who is truly able to take care of themselves with little to no mobility issues and just needs meals provided. First day of residence, the head chef and activities director were fired due to having a relationship. Staff morale is low and issues are obvious when you hear staff complaining in the hallways to each other. Each resident is given a necklace to wear allowing them to push when needing assistance. The 2nd evening it took 25 mins for an aide to come, I had to go down to the director's office and have her radio for someone. She said they were probably giving someone a bath. Turns out the only aide on the floor said she was delivering food trays to rooms, my relative needed to be helped to the toilet. Aide came, but put her unsmoked cigarette on the rail outside of my relative's room, then went in to assist. Guess she was going to take a smoke break. Prioritizing the needs of patients is crucial, yet doesn't happen. Short staffed seems to be the norm for the weekends. Toilet in room clogged on a Saturday and was told it would be fixed on Monday. Unacceptable, no way resident should have to be wheeled out of room to use toilet downstairs or down hall, especially for the amount of money being spent. It was fixed later that day. Two weeks later, toilet broke again. Oxygen issues that were told would be taken care of, over and over and are constantly being addressed. The previous nights dinner tray still in room at dinner time the following day. I could go on and on. WIth each visit there seems to be another issue that has to be addressed. TG there are a few of the staff who seem to be caring, others should be employed elsewhere-compassion and understanding instead of a frown and making one feel as if they are a bother is unacceptable. If it were up to me, my family member would be placed elsewhere. A fancy dining room and pretty sitting area mean nothing when everything else seems to be problematic.

long on esthetics short on services / care

Mom did not move in, we only used them for a respite for 2 weeks, it was not the best experience for my mom so if we need a similar situation in the future I would use a different facility. During 2 weeks my mom received one shower, she had missed medications, and food service did not accommodate her tomato sensitivity as requested. They would give her peanut butter butter sandwiches instead of an alternative meal, I could understand that once or twice but mom reported this was more often than not.

Review for Paramount Senior Living at Polaris

If someone isn't used to good food and doesn't need any care, then it is a fine place to be. It was a terrible experience and the management is incompetent. My family member was there for one year. There were three different executive directors during that time. Almost nothing that we ever requested in a care conference actually happened. They are short staffed and most of the nurses don't care about the residents nor speak English. They didn't follow directions on medications and lied about having administered them. He had bed sores because he sat in his recliner for 12 hours a day. (The sores cleared up within a couple weeks of being at the new place.) They were supposed to change his position but they didn't. It wasn't unusual to take 40+ minutes for someone to respond to the help button. We had to be there ourselves in the evening and morning or hire outside help to ensure that he got ready for bed and to the toilet in the morning.

Not recommended

I do not recommend Paramount Senior Living at Polaris to others. Some of the aides and nurses are helpful and do their jobs well, but not all and many of the nurses do not speak English well enough to communicate. It is not uncommon for an aide to appear 40 minutes after my loved one presses the call button. It is also common for them to clear the call button and to tell him that they will be back. Sometimes two aides come in instead of one and they talk to each other and treat my loved one like an object instead of giving him the dignity of being a person. It is also common for an aide to be wearing ear buds, which prevents the person from hearing him or showing dignity. It took a month for them to get my loved one's medications straight. Part of the problem might be communication between hospice, the pharmacy (that Paramount recommends) and Paramount. However, most of the nurses had no sense of importance or urgency in getting the meds straightened out. They often wouldn't even tell us that they didn't have them and didn't seem to care. Our hospice nurse is supposed to physically look at the meds each week to make sure that there is an adequate supply. When she didn't, during my loved one's fourth month, a few meds ran out and he missed them for a few days. This is unacceptable that a facility would allow meds to run out. The food is not good if you are used to home cooked meals. Almost everything looks like it comes directly from the freezer or a can. Additionally, hospice supplies my loved one's incontinence products, not Paramount. We have to hide the extras because some of the aides have been known to take supplies from my loved one's room to use for someone else.
