going down hill

At first this place seemed like a great place, and the price was lower than many other programs in the area by about 1000$ However, more and more, we started having problems with this place. Lack of communication, lack of attention to cleaning my fathers apartment, his clothes are not returned to him when they do his laundry and he gets other peoples clothes, and they were supposed to follow my dad's diet and they do not strictly enforce it. I call for transportation to his appointments and then when I call to reconfirm they say they didn't know. You have to keep on top of them and for the price, sometimes I feel Im doing things they should be doing. There have been times they have gone above the call of duty to help us, but more recently it has gone down hill for us.

Not so great

Administration seems unaware of needs or wants of elderly. They fail to make reservations at restaurants, then seem surprised when a group can’t be accommodated. Activities poorly coordinated, frequent cancellations, don’t get involved in many opportunities in the community. Caregivers aren’t well trained, often see them yell at, intimidate or ignore residents - I hope my family members never need to use them. If you’re independent you’re really on your own there. Place is beautiful, concierge people are great - but they can’t keep aides, housekeepers- turnover is huge. Everything has to go through corporate for approval and it takes forever. Food is horrible.

Disappointed

My Mother was in the Memory Care area. Like all places there are employees that truly care and others where it's only a job. We have had both. Training on how to interact with dementia residents appeared to be lacking. The turnover was great in her area. My Mom would fall in her room and bruises appeared around her face, forehead and rarely would I be contacted by staff. Many times I was the one telling them that she must have fallen. I was told that If they don't see it, they don't document it. Mom had items taken from her room and sometimes they were misplaced in laundry. But other times, we never found them. I finally started taking pictures of my Mother's belongings and installed a camera. At times, I felt the director was abrupt and rude. When I asked about security, I was told that she couldn't be here 24/7. When Mom was dying and on Hospice, the RN never came to her room to check on her until she died. Fortunately, family and friends were with her.

Still Adjusting

My mom is still adjusting to her new surroundings. Staffing seems to be somewhat short. For the most part, they are friendly but not all of them. There needs to be some improved training in the transport department I've witnessed residents being transported from one location to another and almost being dropped. The administration is aware of this and they can say is we are working on it. Mom is eating she really hasn't complained about the food. Laundry has been ok however there has been a couple of times where I've noticed that a wet towel has been left on the bed and the bed was made over the wet towel.

A negative experience

This community was not what we expected. The nurses seem to care, however the aides do not seem to be trained correctly. It is sometimes very difficult to find/get help when needed, even if you use the pendant. I feel that the marketing team tells you what they think you want to hear and then once you decide to move your loved one in, things change as the charges are inflated, including charging for services they are not providing. This community seems to care more about money than about the residents.

One month's learning experience.

Their friendliness is outstanding. The price is very high for what services are provided. The nursing care program is not administered to what I expected. I had to discontinue their medical plan entirely as they were too inflexible to administer my father's right to use his VA benefits for pharmacy and were going to penalized him $10.00 per day for the VA pharmacy usage. I will admit that the administrative director has indicated that I may drop that plan. We shall see. The food is good, it has been an adjustment for my father to eat at the prescribed times, but he seems to be doing well for his first month there. The activities that are offered seem fine to me, my father doesn't partake because he is in dialysis for 2 days a week. The best part of this facility is that it is only 3 miles from my home and I can be there rapidly.

The big dog needs to be moved

This senior care center is very nice, but aged. There are some issues with cracks in the bathrooms, etc, but overall it's a very nice facility. There is a large dog that usually is in the lobby that seems to be a tripping hazard that no one seems to address. I tried to get around the dog and leash, but no one seemed to take any care to get the dog or leash out of the way. This happened for the last four times that I've been at this facility. The staff is very good and seem to take good care of the seniors. The food choices seem very healthy and good, and there are some activities, but not like I've seen at other senior care places.

Unfortunate Changes

Not what it was formerly. Recent changes have resulted in many vacancies rather than the previous waiting list. Executive chef has been replaced and food is now a disgrace. Mostly unhealthy. Usually unappetizing. Often inedible. Emphasis on starches and very light on vegetables and even protein. Frequent use of corn syrup and sugar. No accommodation for special dietary needs. Not even diabetic menu selections. Small portions now and they charge $8. extra for providing more food at a meal. Some recent instances of delayed and even no responses to beeps for assistance. Rents were just increased 4% for 2017. Though staff and residents are very friendly we are looking to relocate our relatives elsewhere.

convenient to freeway exit

We toured this facility, and a relative had stayed there for respite. We like the food, and the rooms are quite nice. However the housekeeping needs improvement, and it is very large. We would prefer a smaller population, as well as something not right next to major freeway & busy roads. It is really convenient however. The views on some side are really beautiful, but the room size we wanted, overlooked the Carlson Tower and roads. It is quite costly, and for that kind of money we prefer something a little tucked away from the roads (and cleaner).

Things to know about New Perspective West Fargo

The caregiver staff are not consistent, nor are they necessarily kind. There are a few caregivers who have empathy, but the younger ones lack empathy and patience. There is a high turnover in staff. The director is inexperienced and rarely has her door open nor does she get out and visit with the residents The waitress staff are slow and don't always get your order correct. They often run out of certain food items. The activities are the same each week and are not highly attended. The front desk staff is friendly as are the maintenance staff. The sales people do a great job of painting a pretty picture. The apartments are nicely maintained, fresh paint and carpet for each new resident. Maintenance is done swiftly.

Review for New Perspective Sun Prairie

Advocate for your loved ones to get the care they are supposed to get. Check up on them often and speak up when you see issues. I believe New Perspectives means to do well by their residents, but there needs to be better oversight, physical and documentation checks, and more effective training for new care givers. Until that happens, if you have a loved one here, you will need to do those checks yourself.

Language barrier with caregivers

Many language issues. Care givers and wait staff have very poor English skills. Wait time for help is unacceptable. There were no outside of the building activities scheduled while I was there are 2.5 months! I liked my apartment. It was spacious but kitchenette was very inadequate. 45 minutes into meal time, they would run out of entrees.

Needs improvement

I have had my mother there over a year. They have forgot to invite me to her care conference every three months. The turnover is horrible. Staff in the memory care sleep all the time. I've had to wake the up to let me out of the locked unit. Lots of her things have been stolen and not by other residents. My mother is on a wait list for another place and I can't wait to remove her. Assisted living, this place seems amazing. Staff and residents seem very friendly. They have a library, pool, billiard room, goodies spot and a drinking spot. Lots to do for them.

From the beginning. They were quick about taking your money. Very slow about giving appropriate care, to Mom. Missing clothes. Dirty room, and bathrm. Mom sitting in her own poop, in bed. Very questionable, about receiving a shower. Missing 3sets of new towels. On weekends, myself and my daughter changed her bed and her clothes. Very low staff. In July before mom moved there, a person came to the house to tell us what they expected. I told them the foods to stay away from. No one acknowledged. They just gave it. At home caused bathrm issues. The same at perspective. Not sure if mom gets to attend any music events. Or other activities. My experience, I called. Never got feed back. I stopped calling. Fell out of bed 3 times. Hit head. Staff refused guard rails. State law. Kids have them.

Beautiful facility, lovely people but needs better food and more reliable phone service

Most elderly people needing assisted living depend on land line phones as their connection to the outside world. Their spectrum phones are CONSTANTLY off line for weekends and days at a time!!! Too much fried food (or premade and heated up food) nothing made in house that I can tell. Nicer salads (not just bagged and plated) and fresh homemade soups would be appreciated Also the carpeting throughout the dining room needs to be completely removed and replaced w vinyl or something that can be easily cleaned

Beware- lack of care.

My mother not only got out of the memory care. She was also KT looked after and blown off. She got an infection so badly that was dismissed and have to have an amputation because of it. Feeling bad with ignoring it didn't cut it. We moved her a few months ago. Plus they never fixed broken blinds in her room from before even moving in. Bathroom was a mess and didn't fix that. Also having root beer floats is not an activity and the only kind. No stimulation or even walks. Bummer and how extreme they let my mom get and was brought to their attn with nurses several times. It wasn't until a Dr came in and aid she had to go to the ER in an ambulance NOW

Not recommended

The ambience of the facility itself is beautiful and largely what attracted us to it. However, it became quickly evident they are severely understaffed and the staff they have are severely undertrained; especially in the memory care wing. I believe the nursing staff do the best they can understanding the needs of the client, but there are so few aids/workers scattered across the units that it was often impossible to find someone and residents wander around in distress with no support. Redirection and de-escalation skills are nonexistent in many of the staff. My dad often had bruises that were unexplainable by staff, likely due to unsupervised falls. His belongings and entire closet of clothes often went missing and took several days to track down in other resident rooms. My dad stated that the food was fair and the menu seemed to have decent variety. Communication with family was hit or miss. I'd alert the nursing manager of appointments, but arrive to find my dad undressed and not ready. On one occasion, he was ready but wearing shorts and slippers (in December). The main areas of the facility were clean, but my dad's room smelled strongly of urine, his sheets often soiled and his bathroom floor STICKY for days on end, despite a contract agreement stating regular cleanings. I would not recommend this facility. I would have moved him out a lot sooner if there were more readily available memory care placement at another facility. His physical and mental health declined over the course of the year he was there and I truly believe it was exacerbated by the quality of care (or lack-thereof).

did not receive the care we expected

The facility was understaffed, and the staff did not seem motivated to provide proper patient care. They were slow to respond, and showed no initiative in solving problems for the patient, such as a chronically overheated room, and cold breakfasts. My sister only spent a month there before she passed, but we did not receive the hospice style care that we were promised when we admitted her. I regret my decision to place her there.

Review for New Perspective Senior Living West Fargo

I would say it's been ok but awful for the amount of money we are spending to have her there. I would never recommend the memory care unit there. If I had a family member that needs assisted living I would recommend that. Their facility is beautiful and all the residents that I have meet are friendly. Both the people that work the front desk are very friendly.
