Not The Right Match

I was not impressed with the tour they gave me. I requested to see the Memory Care, our need, and I was shown everywhere else through the community. I was unsure of where my loved one would be at and the little things like interaction and environment would not have worked out for us or did not meet our needs.

Disappointed..

I was happy with them until she passed. They owed me money and kept that too. My loved one was only there for 6 days. They charged me for the rest of the month. They couldn't find any of her stuff. I haven't heard anything back. I think I would of been happy with them until she died. I'm disappointed. They said they would at least contact me. It's been 2 months and haven't heard anything. Overall, I'm disappointed.

Nice building, not-so-nice quality of care

The quality of care that my 90-something mother received at Thrive during the 6 months that she lived in the Memory Care wing there was, frankly, a little shocking to me. The staff seemed mostly young, mostly not very experienced, but okay for the most part (professional though not particularly compassionate); they tried to do their jobs, but there never seemed to be enough of them on the floor at any given time, so they always seemed rushed and too often seemed annoyed that they had to deal with frail elderly people. The administrators were hands-off, unresponsive, and bizarrely out to lunch -- *hugely* different than the admin I encountered at both the assisted care community where my mother lived before coming to Thrive and the memory care community where she went after Thrive (both of which, luckily, were lovely, extremely professional, and very easy to work with). Honestly I've never seen anything quite like it. After 6 months of watching my mom's health and peace of mind deteriorate, my husband and I moved her to another (really wonderful) memory facility in Jefferson where -- thank goodness! -- both staff and administration were superb, and (not surprisingly) my mother did much better. I just wish she hadn't had to spend half a year in a place where a whole lot of thought and attention (and money) seemed to have been spent on a pretty, new building and so very, very little seemed to have been spent on enhancing the quality of the lives of the elderly people who lived in it.

Never let your guard down or trust the people in charge at these places

The exe director at the Renaissance ALF let my 94 year old father with dementia and cancer leave the facility at [date removed] looking for his dead wife in Stanardsville in the cold in only his pjs and using a rollator.  He is a huge fall risk.  The one worker that night was brand new and she called the exe director and she told her to let him go.  No police was ever called and I learned of it from a text at 2am from the same exe director.  The whole thing was caught on Ring cameras that I bought and installed there 3 yrs prior and had been supporting ever since with the exe director's consent.  The exe director had them physically removed the following day.  I immediately removed my father the next day because the exe director refused to let me bring my own external caregivers in from Brightstar.  She only wanted me to use the people she picked out, which her own daughter was on that very short list. Not enough characters to speak of the lies/deceit told to me and my father.

Completely respectful

I would tell others to be careful of the staff members here. They are not communicative and do not talk to you like they should. The administration is terrible, 2 weeks after my dad passed away they filed a lawsuit against me for payment even though I had not even gotten a bill. I would not recommend to anybody.

Poor corporate management

Although facility and residents are clean thanks to dedicated staff members who go the second and third miles without overtime pay and working for just over minimum wage, the facility is frequently understaffed, no-shows. Hardest working staff very underpaid. Food is edible but definitely frozen, or from cans; bread is tasteless. Staff will not eat there. Everything done on the cheap. Deceptive advertising in that there are "two nurses on duty" -- they have nursing degrees but are on the administrative staff doing administrative work, not checking on residents, even sick residents. Bedbugs and pneumonia seem to be a recurring problem. Activities personnel untrained, nonproductive, just drawing a paycheck. Complaints to corporate and to state offices who oversee these facilities are not taken seriously/nothing done. Took the state officials a month to investigate. Residents are mostly nursing home level, not assisted living, and that requires more staffing. Other Legacy Village facilities may offer better, but be careful.

Only spoke to personnel at The Harbor. After hearing my brother's situation, they were honest enough that he would not be a fit, which I can respect. However, the additional information that no one in Northern Virginia would accept him into their communities and to look only at psychiatric wards without a real explanation was not. The place that took my brother is not a psychiatric ward nor is it in Northern Virginia or even Southern Virginia. And he is doing very well.

Not recommeneded.

THIS IS NOT AN ASSISTED LIVING FACILITY, THIS IS A NURSING HOME. Unfortunately this is a for-profit facility and therefore are not picky about the residents they accept. This is a nursing home, not assisted living. A memory care is supposed to be for those in the mid to early stages of dementia and Alzheimer's. This facility is filled with those that are in the late stages and are difficult to work with. There is possibly 2-3 residents within the facility that can be considered eligible for assisted living care. The residents deserve more and deserve a facility that can better suit their needs. I would consider choosing a different option for your family member if you feel as though they are better suited for an assisted living. Also, pay special attention to their assessments that are made on your loved one, they need to be comprehensive & provide a multitude of information outside of their finances.

I would not recommend this place to anyone.

We were only here a very short time. They assessed him three times to make sure this was a good fit. Once they moved him in they said he was not an appropriate match. I had to stay and take care of him the whole time he was there, because they didn't do it. I stayed and bathed him and fed him. It was a nightmare! It was dirty, two times I came in and he was on the floor crawling. There was feces in the hallway of the facility and it was there until I told someone about it. My dad cut himself and no one knew how and there was no incident report. There was blood everywhere in his room, I waited to see if they would clean the bathroom, eventually, four days later, I cleaned it myself. I would not recommend place to anyone.

Look elsewhere

My grandmother is a resident at St. Gabriel's in Murrells Inlet, SC. We have brought our concerns to their staff and management numerous times, and each time we are "yessed" and things are ok for a few days. Then things go back to uncaring and neglectful. Here is a partial list of our concerns: 1. Resident was prescribed a pureed diet by a doctor. She ONLY receives broth on a daily basis....once in awhile they will give her pudding or applesauce. Her nutritional needs are not being met. 2. Resident needs assistance walking, even short distances like from her bed/chair to her bathroom. Assistance is almost always severely delayed...often by 30-90 minutes. The facility claims their "response time" is under 10 minutes, but that time is the time it takes for an employee to come to the resident to ask what she needs and then that employee leaves to get the appropriate person to address the need. Resident's needs are not met for 30-90 minutes. 3. Due to Covid19 safeguards, the facility will not transport the resident to necessary medical appointments, yet they are allowing new residents to enter the facility.

Not a good place to call home

This is really just assisted living with a locked door in the memory care unit. The layout is not conducive to easy navigation for your memory impaired loved one. The staff is ill trained in memory care and some were so uncaring, made my dad cry a lot. If I hadn't bathed my dad, he would have smelled bad all the time. They would put clean clothes on him over soiled skin and never brushed his teeth. Lack of supervision at night is appalling. I stayed over night several times before we moved dad.
