A Place for Mom has scored Commonwealth Senior Living with 8 out of 10 using our proprietary review score based on 236 reviews in the last 2 years. Over all time, Commonwealth Senior Living has 1,261 reviews with an average "overall experience" of 4.1 out of 5.
They could not even do simple things like ensure that residents have their teeth in their mouth, their hearing aids on and their glasses each day. Residents live a very undignified existence there. Fortunately, my mother had family that would come in and help.

I am in Independent Living and I have found it very hard to mild into the community here. I would not mind being helpful in areas, but there is not Community invites or get togethers over Coffee tea or Cake or even a little Bring a Dish to the Gazebo on a Sunday afternoon or evening. Everyone seems to be Independent and lonely. I feel for all of them, but worry about becoming too attached. By the way, that lawn bench on the corner was a GREAT IDEA and it gave comfort to the ones that enjoyed sitting on it. It was old and rickety and would like to see a newer model that is sturdy and safe there!

As with most businesses some employees at Commonwealth were enthusiastic and went out of their way to be helpful. Some staff were careless and at times inconsiderate in the performance of their responsibilities. But that is likely symptomatic of the care giving business where staff generally is lean because of operational cost containment and forced staff reduction savings considerations. The end result of this was that available staff could not always respond in a timely fashion to the immediate needs or requests of the residents. Plus the employee stress levels this created across the board was very high from what I witnessed on my daily visits to Commonwealth. So new residents expectations and their actual service experience may not be exactly what they anticipate and expect it to be. The low rating I gave on food was not so much about quality but with the availability of the food planned to be served at various mealtimes. More than a few times during my wife's stay at Commonwealth they ran out of the food she ordered in advance of the meal and she had to resort to eating whatever was offered in its place or do with skipping a meal. I know with COVID that food deliveries might have been messed up or delayed. But during my wife's stay, which was well after COVID, there is little excuse for what appeared to be regular issues with last minute food substitutions or only having one choice. This happened several times where the only available choice was a fish item, which my wife is allergic to. This is something that left my wife with a negative feeling about her experience at Commonwealth. I will give positive credit to Commonwealth as to their sincere efforts to keep their residents involved in daily activities within their varying range of mental and physical abilities to participate. That's no easy task to accomplish. Commonwealth does have a wonderful lake and grounds behind the main building structure. So for those residents who don't have serious physical limitations they can sit outside on nice days and enjoy the surrounding environment.

They are experiencing high turn over lately, not sure what is causes that issue. But it can be confusing for my mom. My dad responds better to certain staff members, so when they are pulled to another area he gets aggressive and agitated. I know this really can not be helped, but it is difficult for dementia patients when things are different from day to day.

Do your due diligence, visit the places, talk to both residents and staff to get a better understanding of how happy they are living and working there. In our experience at Commonwealth, the staff was very caring and really good to my dad. They were short staffed, but did their best. They did the best with the food they had to work with. The nursing staff would keep me in the loop. I never was able to get in contact with [name removed]. The hospice folks were helpful.

They're just after the money. They don't hire enough staff in the dining room. The food is not very good but they won't invest in a good chef. Half the time my loved oneleaves there hungry and I have to buy snacks. We picked this community, because it was close and they made it sound so good. It's decorated so nicely and I really liked it. I had no idea that some of the aides were so mean.

My family and loved one have had an average experience with Seaton Chesterfield. We would recommend that you ask lots of questions to different staff members and residents during your tour to make sure you are getting the entire picture and correct information. Make sure you continue to advocate for your loved one and visit often to make sure your loved one is doing well. During the time our loved one has been here, it has been hard to find staff to answer our questions without being vague, and us having to ask further follow up questions.

We toured with Commonwealth Senior Living at Willow Grove and the view from dining area was nice. The person giving us the tour at Commonwealth seemed more of a car salesman.
We picked this community, because the price was better than other local places, and the location was closer to both myself and my brother. It's a good place for the price, but the constant turnover with staff makes it difficult for anyone to be taught the way to take care of someone. Overall, the staff seems nice and helpful. Management is courteous, but is somewhat unreliable.

The initial sales person was wonderful. My mom has mental health issues so she was a challenge for them. The communication could be much better with returning emails in a timely fashion. Out of other communities we had looked at, Commonwealth Senior Living was the only one that would except our loved one. I would recommend it if they're trying to find placement for a love one

It's beautiful! They are going through some changes but seem to be handling it well. My mom is adjusting well. Communication has been a struggle. But we are working through it daily. That is the one thing that is a great comfort! My moms care is amazing. With her struggles to adjust they have had constant care with her. That feels good to know they care about her.

Had some issues with meds in the beginning that took longer than it should have to sort out, especially pain meds. Food is mediocre. Very welcoming. Responsive to our questions and concerns although the medicine dispensing issues took far too long to correct. The apartments are nice with large windows. Nice Common space on every floor. Front desk staff especially friendly.

Response time to resident's requests for care/attention needs to be improved. The staff is well meaning but seem to be short handed more often than not. My loved one often had to wait 30-60 minutes for a staff member to respond to his life alert bell. The last straw was the assistant director of nursing calling to inform me they believed my loved one had suffered a stroke and they were waiting for a "transport van" to take him to the hospital. I insisted she call 911 and her response conveyed that she was inconvenienced by the request, but she did comply.
