A Place for Mom has scored Commonwealth Senior Living with 8 out of 10 using our proprietary review score based on 228 reviews in the last 2 years. Over all time, Commonwealth Senior Living has 1,161 reviews with an average "overall experience" of 4.1 out of 5.
I think that most of the staff is great. I love the nurse and executive director, they are very nice, caring and open if you go to them with issues and they really listen and take things into consideration. It is just very difficult to find good help right now just like every where else, it seems like there is a lot of turnover. A couple of the kitchen staff really needs some changes, they are not the most friendly and argumentative but a few others are great. I feel I am doing more work than I was expecting too. I think there are changes being made so we are hoping for some improvements soon.

I am pleased with the activities provided, they do a great job of coming around and getting him to go to things. He is a very critical eater and great cook himself and he loves the food that is served. The care from the Devonshire staff is a 5 and they are great people, but the medical doctor is not good. It took him 3 weeks to get around to seeing him and his care needs are still not being addressed. A big issue I have is my father always gets his medications from the VA and they made that note. The first month he got a bill from a pharmacy in Richmond and they billed him over $600 for his medications which he could not afford. They said they would take care of it, but it has happened every month since then and I am not happy about that.

This community was dated in appearance and not the type of environment my loved one was looking for. The tour was basic and I was able to get all of the information that I needed.
We toured the community but we didn't really like the layout or the size of rooms. The marketing person was really nice and she followed up with us when we toured a few years ago. The new one we didn't get a good feel of.
We toured Commonwealth Senior Living and we did not choose this facility because it had too much of a nursing home feel to it.
We were looking for respite care, and they were right down the street from us. IT was for short term, which was fine. If it was long-term, I would not have put my mom there. I would have moved her. I feel like medications were their solution to late state dementia, basically sedate her as opposed to deal with the challenges. Our family doctor had some better, less sedating medication solutions to handle aggression and things that. It was difficult to judge care during CovidI don't think they had enough staff. Even when we were setting things up, it would take a long while to get anyone to come help us. Her first timein a facility lik ehtat, she needed a lot more care than what she could have gotten. Mostly dealt with sales staff, they wer enicekind and acoommodating, they were great. There was always a lot of confusion about supplies included or already paid for. Some sizing issues too big for her. Thye did call us and let us know if any big issues arose that rquired hospitializatin . Kept usinformed about that, that was good. I can't ding them too much for that, for short term solution. For what we paid, I would have liked to have seen her have more one one attention.

I think if you have someone who is truly assisted living capable, it would be okay. If you have someone who has extensive needs, there's not enough care provided. And that's not their fault - they're just not set up for that. On top of that, it's been very difficult not being able to go in and see our loved one. From what we can see, the common spaces are clean, and the individual rooms a little less so. That could be due to Covid, and/or an expectation that the resident to be able to do some level of cleaning. Some of the care staff do a great job and watch carefully, but others do not. Our loved one tells us she loves most of the people who interact with her, that they're very gentle and sweet. One or two she has described as rough/harsh, which is hard for her. She's had a couple of hospitalizations in a few months time, which is concerning to us. There was a nurse who thought our loved one was crying wolf when she couldn't breathe, which was also concerning. Recently there has been a leadership change, and we really do like the new director a lot. He seems to really care about people and is very friendly. So I believe that things will continue to improve with him here. The cost is a bit high, but it's reasonable compared to other facilities, and it really is a nice facility. They have lots of activities, there's a hydroponic garden the residents can participate in, and there are lots of porches for them to sit outside.

This visit was disappointing! The Director is very experienced and that an the monthly costs are real pluses. The monthly fee includes everything including laundry and there no add-ons or up front fees! The facility is old and in process of being renovated! The living room and dining room are small and poorly furnished. The floors in all the common areas were dirty! Overall I was not impressed!

When you are calling to check in on your loved one, often times it is very difficult to get a hold of someone. The rooms are a pretty good size, and the furnishings are okay, however somewhat outdated. The food they serve is okay.

It would depend on if they wanted to go into memory care or assisted living areas. When my husband was there that the CNAs were always understaffed, there wasn't enough supervision. They had several difficult and active memory care cases. The residents were going in to other people's rooms. There were three hallways, and the wasn't enough staff to cover these hallways. The activities are fantastic. The food is delicious. The people are wonderful. You need to have enough supervision to cover the the disability of the residents.

[name removed] very nice along with other staff members we met/saw. Rooms somewhat smaller than other communities visited, not appt of closet space. Not particularly fond of the companion suites (one room, 2 twins and 1-bthrm) - no privacy for resident. Also the singles had 1/2-bath with shower & bath rooms on hall. l did like that they grow some of the leafy vegetables & herbs in a hydroponic system for use in meals. Residents were involved pre-covid era. Also, the utilization of dolls & stuffed animals in the memory care for the ladies was a nice touch, along with individual headsets with playlists specific to each resident another good idea. I understand the benefit/precaution of separating men & women in the memory care unit, but it may not be best for my relative. The security of needing a code to enter/leave the memory care unit is secure. The grounds are nice, and once covid-19 passes will be enjoyable for all. I toured later in the day, so there wasn't much hustle and bustle amongst the residents as seen at other communities. All in all an okay community.

What stood out to us most when we first we visit was the overall appearance of this community, it has a very nice look to it. The rooms are adequate in size. The food at this community is more on the bland side, and they only have designated meal times. Beware of bringing in valuable items into this community, our loved one has had things stolen.

The Courtyard looks amazing and residents are enjoying activities in this Home for the Aged. The residents love being outdoors in a facility with such potential! Thanks to this review service and the management, families and residents got some results in just a short time. Aging well & best care practices are a must for these deserving residents and the families who love and support them. Hoping this management continues to strive for excellence in all areas of care. That will bring a five star rating and success for all! The beautiful park outside needs a lot of work too but that is up to the owner! Wouldn't it be amazing to have a vibrant community that all ages would want come to and be involved in? Lots of building going on in the village so a message to: owner, builder, investors - COMPANIES must deliver on their PROMISES of EXCELLENCE to the community! Then see the REWARDS!
