A Place for Mom has scored Cogir Senior Living with 8.8 out of 10 using our proprietary review score based on 1,557 reviews in the last 2 years. Over all time, Cogir Senior Living has 4,803 reviews with an average "overall experience" of 4.3 out of 5.
Poor management. They are not committed to going the extra mile to improve. They are complacent, and inconsistent. They are content with mediocrity. The food is below par. Current Executive Chef is not really qualified, she has been bumped up to fill vacancies. She will not be able to perform to necessary levels. An experienced Executive Chef will have to be recruited to improve food and beverage to acceptable standards. I believe there is general discontent among the residents. I have been here for close to 3 years, and the quality of overall service has steadily declined. We have had 5 Executive Chefs in a 3 year period. That is a telling experience that indicates there is not an effective experience between the Executive Chef and the General Manager. Progress has to be achieved to turn things around.

My MIL lived here during the transition from Brookdale to Cogir. I (and she) saw firsthand the downgrades in services, quality of food, and reduced staffing and activities. The focus was on outward appearance and bottom line. It's a small community, and yet after 1.5 years there the ED and head nurse didn't even know who she was, even though she was well liked by staff and residents. They were happy to charge for add'l services, but it was impossible to get anyone to respond to questions and concerns about those charges. When she died (in her apt. at the facility), I received no communication, assistance, not even an "I'm sorry for your loss," from the management or staff. Not even a "here's what needs to happen now" communication. I was honestly appalled by the overt lack of caring. Guess she really was just a monthly check to them.

My Mom moved to the Quarry in mid-December after being in the hospital and no longer able to live independently. She had Parkinson’s so was in the ‘ridge’ at The Quarry, a higher level care section. They tout a specialty for Parkinson’s, but I didn’t see anything other than a general exercise class and a support group supporting it. They didn’t seem knowledgeable about Parkinson’s and I often felt like when they provided updates to me, they were punishing or belittling her when she had odd behaviors related to advanced Parkinson’s, it made me sad. The good: she loved the actual caregivers, [name removed] in the gym, and thought the food was pretty good, provided you were able to go to the dining room. Food delivered to your room was always cold. She also loved swimming, during the brief time she was able to go to the pool. The bad: it took over a week before we saw a care plan and a month before it was being followed as written. We had difficult communication with our care coordinator, though eventually it got a bit better. We experienced laundry being mixed with other resident laundry, I found her bed remade without any sheets on it, we provided good towels but they only used their Quarry issued towels. Also, keep in mind that housekeeping is once a week, which for some is fine, but should be more frequent in a high care area, obviously, those residents can’t do things themselves. I went every other day to visit and there was only about a month where things went smoothly. After the first month, things got better, then when her health/Parkinson’s got worse, so did the care. When she needed help with showering, toileting, transport, they said her care needs were too much, and they didn’t have available rooms in the enhanced care unit. I went to other facilities to look for a place to move her to. They mentioned charging her for a 30 day notice if she moved, really? They couldn’t meet her needs and were requiring a private caregiver in her room, that is about $700 per day! All of a sudden, they had a room come available the first of April, unfortunately, she died a few days later. The Quarry loves their independent living residents, but those that require more care, not so much. Look at the Facebook posts, activities are focused on independent living and employees, not the residents with higher level of needs. I was paying for her care, not parties! 3 caregivers for 29 residents was not adequate. Call buttons often weren’t answered for 30 minutes, but they’ll tell you their average is 5 minutes. If your loved one requires a high level of care, this is NOT the place, look at a smaller place, the bells and whistles mean nothing if there isn’t good care when our loved ones need it most. Also, if you have a family member there, make sure someone is available to check on them regularly - I can’t imagine how it would have looked if I wasn’t a frequent visitor. I had to do laundry, wash dishes, clean the toilet, brush Mom’s hair, cut her nails, and make sure she was decently dressed EVERY time I visited, none of these are things they worry about. Mom died on [date removed]. I am very happy to be done with The Quarry.

My uncle lived at EP for ~1.5 yrs. Our concerns were: (1) services not being provided as advertised [stated weekly trash removal; reality was housekeeper picked-up CERTAIN trash so my uncle had to take remaining trash to the dumpster]; (2) I personally heard 5 different residents state they were refused a meal by staff telling them arriving 15 mins after start of meal was too late [rent covers price of 3 daily meals]; (3) EP recycles one type of cardboard only, DOES NOT RECYCLE ANY plastic, glass, metal, etc., & due to coronavirus pandemic EP is using styrofoam containers for 5 daily deliveries [3 meals, 2 snacks, 3-5 sides/desserts, 3-5 beverages]; (4) EP’s best feature is the wildlife drawn to its pond but EP staff tells residents & visitors not to feed them because they are trying to get rid of the wildlife as they are tired of cleaning behind them; (5) parking lot layout is horrible, needs a lot more spaces. We discussed these issues with Gen Mgr [name removed] who listened, did not ask any questions, did not make us feel she cared about any of this. Other managers [[name removed] & another lady] just nodded at us, smiled, & walked away.

Don’t be fooled the price they give you is just a stating point. If you want a shower that is extra. If you want your laundry done that too is extra. If you want your pills given to you that is extra too. If you want more than on shower a week that too is extra. The food sucks. That’s why so many residence eat in there room. If you like smacking you’ll love the court yard. Take a deep breath.

I really think it a mistake that such a large percent of our money is spent on recruiting new residents and providing meeting facilities for nonresidents. It also bothers lots of us that alcoholic drinks are available at what seems to be an unlimited amount. Multiple times a week alcohol is free. The food quality is poor and people with special needs do not get them met. Staff administrating medicine seem to have minimal training,

In the year since my family member moved here, it's really gone downhill. Not only is the staff turnover inordinately high, the entire management team has gone! The food seems to be getting worse by the month. It's already expensive for what you get, and now they're increasing the rent by over 5%. I think they figure that they've got a captive audience--once you move here, you won't be able to leave. Horrible way to run a business--but that's just what it is, a business which is beholden to their shareholders--NOT their residents.

Really an assisted living facility with a beautiful view over a park and Kennedy Golf course. Only 24 units for independent living and every resident must take 3-meal plan. Also, all temperature controls for resident apartments are controlled by the management. It was very warm during tour but air conditioning was not going to be turned on until Mother's Day?

Not impressed with the facility. It looks like a hallway out of the Shinning. Companion rooms are just one big room with a standing closet separating it. They don't allow locks on rooms and their policy is to lock up make-up. Hard Pass.

I toured Cedar Village while looking for living options for my mother, and I really didn’t like it. The assisted living was not anything special, and I felt as though memory care was an after though. I wasn’t impressed, and I just didn’t feel as though my mother would get the best possible care there.
