My thoughts on Andara

The food is usually pretty good. The dining room tables are usually occupied by "clicks" who would rather you NOT eat with them. Dining staff are excellent. Activities are mainly geared to women, and attended by women. Movies chosen by women. I have my own car so it is easier for me. Many of the residences do not have a car and are restricted, in when they want to see doctors, shopping etc, by when the Andara transportation is ready to handle them.

Things have declined since the new owners have come in!!

The staff at Andara are nice and friendly with my mom and the family. We have noticed that the quality of the food and some of the services have cheapened up. The activities overlap so she is not able to enjoy some of the activities she likes. The community is somewhat clean however I do believe the carpets could use a cleaning as there are stains and some minor smells coming from them. It is to early to say if I would recommend this community.

Brookdale Manteca did not follow through!

My friend is currently staying at this community and she is not happy. When she moved in the staff said they will watch and help her move to assisted living when she was ready. She has let me know that she is not happy there and I am working with the community to resolve these issues. I would recommend looking into the community a little further before a loved one moves in.

Very Good Staff

My mother is doing well and the staff is great for helping her adjust to the community. This is a nice community and it is very well-kept and clean. I really like the staff they have been wonderful with all the help. They do keep the residents busy with activities through out the week. She enjoys the meals and the dining area. This is a good community with good people. So I would recommend it.

The food could use some improvement

It's going okay. The food could use some improvement, though she seems to be fine with it. The only thing we would have preferred besides better food, would be a more open dining schedule. Other than that things seem fine, the people are friendly, and it seems to be pretty clean.

Brookdale Rohnert Park

Overall I and my family member are very pleased with Brookdale Rohnert Park. The staff and apartments are very nice. The entire complex is well kept and clean. The quality of the food is the major complaint. Much is tasteless and not appealing. It is not the actual food itself but the preperation and variety.

cater too much to special diets

I am really pleased with the friendliness and how accommodating the staff are at Madrona Hills. The meals are good but they seem to cater too much to special diets. The food they serve is very small portioned and not flavorful. Mom is spending money on other food because she isn't getting full at the facility. I would have more choices for ones that aren't on special diets. There are times my mom wont go down and eat. I have asked if she can ask for seconds since the portions are so small. All of the residents are paying the same amount so they need to offer a selection of food that everyone likes. I love it there and love that shes there. The transition has been rough on her, but now she is into it. She is making friends and playing cards. Overall it has been a good experience, they just need to fix the food problem.

Not as pet friendly as marketing would suggest

Emerald Pond has a lot to recommend it. There is a nice pond out front, the food is pretty good.... However, on the tour, the sales rep made a point of pets being welcome. Same for the website. After my mother moved in, her impression was that this "welcome" of pets, at least her moderate sized dog, was less than indicated. The contract states that pets may not be in the commons area, they must be in the resident's unit or transiting to or from outside. There is no good area for walking pets, It would be nice if there were a walking path with one or two "poop" baskets and some bags, such as I have seen at many highway rest areas.

Just starting out

Mom has not been there a month yet and the one thing I can say with 100% certainty is the staff - each one of them thus far have been outstanding. With this I am very impressed. As far as actually rating the facility goes it is just too soon for me to tell. She is settling in and getting to know her space and they are just now getting to know her as well. I would like to give it another two months before I can truthfully rate the facility. My overall review is that it is good - so far.

friendly

Most of the people there are very friendly and easy to work with, and very sweet. There was one care giver that was a little on the rough edge. I am not an expert at facilities like this, but from what I could tell it was pretty good. We were trying to keep costs down as all these places are very expensive and of course you get what you pay for.

They are a 3.5 out of five.

They are a 3.5 out of five. There are some minor things that could be improved like it can take a little while for work orders to be completed, and minor things like that. We have addressed these concerns and they are working on them. Other than that things are going okay.

Good, responsive staff, more staff for activities would be good

For us, it's convenient to our work and home; that is key. The social interaction that she gets is huge. The place is clean, and the staff is relatively attentive. Our rep had been looking for a smaller 4 or 8 bed homes, but those would have been farther from us, and there would have been less social interaction, and this is a better situation for her. Staff does their best by her care. The staff is pretty good. It seems like when there's been an issue, they've always known about it and taken care of it right away. The administration seem a little more distant, but the immediate staff are very responsive. Care is well coordinated. On Friday, I was there for an activity. The activities guy is great. However, I wonder if just one person is enough. Maybe there could be more than one event with more than one person coordinating it. Also sometimes more people can provide more care. My mother has mild issues but can't get out of her care. The others have more serious issues. It's probably nit picking, but I wish others had the same level of impairment she did, and also that more people were around to assist people at activities as needed. We found this facility the best overall option between location, cost, and social interaction; we wanted her to be around more people.

Very good for the price.

When I looked at other places, it's kind of typical of other places at the same price.. It's independent living, so there aren't any care services. I can't rate it on care services. My parents haven't gotten into any activities. They seem to have alot listed but my parents haven't participated in them. I think it's very good. The appearance, what they offer, it's the only place where my Mom said she felt she could live at, out of all of the places we looked at. It's a good location, especially for my brother and sister, who live the closest.

Convenient for us and a more affordable option

My mom is 89 & has been at Harvard Square for over a year. Due to a fall when she was 88 causing a broken upper arm and a subsequent stroke, she needs fairly extensive assistance with dressing, bathing & transport to meals. There has been a recent change in facility ownership and we're still trying to figure out if there's going to be any benefit to the residents. It feels like meals have become skimpy in portions, and that there isn't enough staffing. The care staff, while typically kind, is predominantly "English as a second language" and this can be a problem for elderly people who don't always process well cognitively and may be losing hearing. Communication can be difficult. My mother doesn't participate in any activities so we can't comment on the quality of those. Overall, it's a nice facility and because of her assistance needs, the only option we can afford. She has a studio apartment and a small kitchenette, but she sleeps in a recliner and can't walk other than to get to the bathroom. The rooms/apartments here are bigger in general than other places we looked at. It is an older building, so the apartment bathrooms could be more accessible, the ventilation system more reliable etc. I was hoping the new admin would address these issues. The residence is close to my home and I'm mom's only family so this is a convenient option. It's so hard to move her that we just live with the deficits.

Didn't really care for the memory care area.

I saw the memory care area here. I didn't really care for it. I saw a different Emeritus, and they were great! They seemed to keep the residents active, and played games with them. They got the same food the rest of the residents did. The memory care at this Emeritus was not that way, and is the main reason we did not go here.

Great place except for current head manager.

My parents live in a cottage. It's a nice facility which is well maintained and has many activities the residents appear to enjoy. The food is average, but I gather that's typical of these types of places, since they can't make the food too spicy or exotic due to dietary needs and tastes of this age bracket. Inclusive features are nice, but the facility is on the pricey end. I would have given 4.5 stars but current head manager is not service-oriented and requires the residents to follow his rigid policies instead of flexing around their needs. Co-manager and previous managers have been great, so hopefully this manager will move on to something else better suited to his personality.
