Nice clean facility - communications could be better

They are not very good about being clear on the services like what he is getting/what is is not getting etc. There are just little things like that they could improve on communication wise, we have had to reach out multiple times and ask the questions rather than it all being laid out for us. I think they could do a better job of helping the families and the new residents get adjusted. The facility is very nice and clean and they have a lot of great activities provided for the residents, but I do think they could do a better job of encouraging them to join in. They have a family app where you can see what activities your loved one is participating in which is nice. The staff are all very friendly and I know that they have their hands full.

Recommend with reservations

I think Cogir of Vallejo Hills is a decent place. You'll definitely need to be your patients advocate. I had to babysit my moms stay, which is what I thought I was paying them for. Because of that, I didn't have a 100% peace of mind. My understanding is - she was there for respite stay for 14 days vs long-term. When I talked to the business manager, they let me know that the level of care can differ when in respite. She needed very simple things, for example: she had a strict diet due to some gastrointestinal issues and needed help putting lotion on. She was very limited on what she could eat from the dining area; so she ended up eating the same meal for the two weeks she was there. I was led to believe that the chef could work with her and with residents like her, but it seems like that was only the case for long-term residents. On day one when I was already out of town, they had to call 911 to transport her to the ER. They called me because they needed direction on what to do, although it was spelled out on her record. Upon leaving the hospital, the ER called me asking how should they discharge her back to the community. There was no ownership on behalf of Cogir to get her back to the community. Plan B would've been to transport her via ambulance with my okay, but thankfully I had a neighbor who was available to take her back. Cogir never followed up with me to let me know she was settled or had made it back. It was a lot of following up on my end, which was kind of unsettling. The facility was well-maintained, but there was not a lot of follow up after her visit to ask how her stay was. And for the cost I paid, I did expect some level of that. They have gone through some managerial changes, so their level of ownership may have been deluded because of all the organization changes. The location of the community was very ideal for me, and the everyday staff themselves were very attentive and they made her feel welcomed. I just had a concern with the business management staff, and their overall ownership. There was such high turnover and I'm unsure if that's a good or bad thing.

Our Experience, Would Recommend

Love the caregivers. The care has been rather good and consistent. The dining is problematic because we are vegetarians. 1/4 of the meals are vegetarian. The care of the staff is adequate and the facilities are adequate as well. They offer a variety of activities including someone playing music, exercising, media program, poker, puzzles, movies, etc.

I hope that my loved one is safe and happy

Tribute is a lovely place. my loved one has a nice room with an overlooking view. she's very active, has gained weight, and participates in activities. they offer things like bingo, bowling, ring toss, sing along, etc. there are a lot of pluses here and my loved one has a nice group of friends she hangs out with. we have hired an outside aide who is familiar with our family and comfortable with my loved one. she has assisted a lot with her care services. our loved one was there for five weeks and never received a shower. when we asked the staff why they hadn't bathed her, they answered "because your loved one said no." this is a memory care unit, and I assumed that they were equipped to handle residents who may need more attention or patience. our aide noticed our loved one had a developing health concern and brought it to the attention of a nurse. we were given the run around with no sense of urgency to look into the issue. the nurse said the head nurse needs to check the records, which further confused us because she could have simply just examined my loved one while she was there. it feels like there has to be a family presence there in order for them to stay on top of things. I had to escalate the situation for them to take matters into their own hands and it actually turned out to be something serious and potentially life threatening. anytime a concern comes up, it seems like they have no idea where it came from or what to do about it. I'm unsure of the nurses protocol for handling certain things, but I haven't noticed any camaraderie or teamwork amongst the nursing staff. I would like for them to come together and communicate with one another, especially with the health concerns of residents. the overall communication is lacking, I've called during meetings or various times throughout the day and rarely receive a call back. I also feel that there needs to be more supervision. my loved one has learned how to shut her door without locking it, so she wanders in and out. our aide came by one day and no one was able to tell her where she was. she eventually found her in her bedroom, trying to clean up an accident she made. we're paying an additional cost for an aide for our benefit, not for Tribute's. we're not paying to take the burden off of them, we're paying to have someone there to look after her and make sure she is well taken care of. despite those things, the people at the front desk are phenomenal! [name removed] and [name removed] are so responsive. the activities director and whomever manages the meals and dining are great as well. overall, a good community; they're just short handed and it shows in the care services and attentiveness towards their residents.

Decent But Not Exceptional

The communication could be better between the staff and the family. Some of the staff are better about that than others. The main director was good, and the director of sales and marketing gets back to me all the time. Otherwise, sometimes I will send emails or texts, and sometimes I get a response while other times I don't. We weren't told that we needed to label all of our loved one's clothing and bedding. Somehow something went missing during laundry service. It would have been nice to know ahead of time so we could have avoided that issue. Overall the community is not the best but definitely not the worst, decent but not exceptional. Our tour was very quick, but from what I saw, it looked very clean, no concerns there, no weird smells Everyone is friendly and helpful. There is restaurant style dining there. Activities are pretty limited, especially with an outbreak of Covid. The residents were asked to stay in their rooms to reduce exposure and keep everyone healthy.

Nice facility with growing pains

They do offer a lot of nice activities but due to COVID things were shutdown. One of the reason who chose this community was they had a two bedroom open on the first floor which made it easily accessible to our loved ones. We had two meals and the food was fine, nothing special, but our loved one said he had good meals.

Covid-19 made stay very short

covid-19 curtailed many of their benefits, ie travel to doctors, etc... food was excellent wife was only there from [dates removed]. Her Lewy Body Disease overtook her. She went into Hosp on [date removed] and died in hospital on [date removed]. The 3 months minimum lease made the unanticipated short stay very costly. If it had not been for Covid-19 it probably would have been quite nice, but with all the restrictions imposed by Covid-19 it is not fair to try and truly rate them correctly.

Good for the most part.

Over all they are a good value for the money. They are a little deceptive on their promise that they can drive you to your doctor appointments, that is only available if your doctor appointment is in the morning Monday - Wednesday. They are not equipped at all for those occupants who have dogs. They require you to pick up after your pet but do not provide any outside trash cans, at all. I guess they except to bring the bag back inside and dispose of it in the building!! This complex is only staff part time! Staff is on duty from 7:30 in the morning till 7:30 at night! This causes me a little bit of heart burn. Meals have been good, and entertainment has been good. I feel the premises are secure and well maintained.

Would recommend

My mom is much happier at Garden Club than she was at a different facility. She loves the staff and how friendly the atmosphere is there. Garden Club has the feel of a community center rather than a hotel. Downsides have been high staff turnover and they have had trouble finding and keeping a head chef so the food quality has diminished.

Care at Orchard

My husband was at Orchard for the last few weeks of his life. He was well cared for and his only complaint was that I couldn't take him home. The staff always seemed to know where he was when I would arrive to visit and if he was participating in the planned activities there. It may have been helpful if he had more physical/mental therapy to maintain what little strength he had. There are no RN's on staff or MD's so the level of care in that regard was not available there. He enjoyed the interaction with the attendants and helpers and was generally well cared for.

Cascadian Retirement

My mom moved into the Cascadian about a year ago, and she is pretty happy. She is independent, and in good health. We liked the Cascadian because it offered a balance of independence and support services, and was much more affordable than many other locations. She has a one bedroom with a deck (and a view), and a kitchenette. The Holiday Retirement model (am assuming that most do not have full kitchens), which include three meals a day, would provide good value, but my mom doesn't eat in the dining room. She is pretty introverted, and I have talked to the activities coordinator (I think that is her title) about ways to help mom to feel more comfortable, but it hasn't worked out. I've eaten with her in the dining room several times, and it feels like there are firmly-formed groups at most tables. In other communities that I know about, the staff assigns seating in the dining room, which rotates. This does disadvantage those people who want to sit together, but helps the less sociable, like my mom. So, it becomes less of a good value when she is not eating in the dining room. I read the resident meeting minutes, and at a recent meeting, they discussed a new resident welcome committee – this would be great, even if mom is no longer a new resident. She has taken advantage of the field trips, and a few activities. The staff has been open about our requests to do modifications - put up curtain rods, for one, and seem open to residents wanting to make the place their own. One concern I have is the staff turn-over. In the past year, there have been changes to manager, assistant manager, office manager, facilities staff, dining room service staff and chefs. The latter can only be an improvement, because the meals that I have eaten with mom have been, to put it kindly, a mixed bag. As others have said, the decor in the communal areas is pretty dated, but that's not a deal breaker. The front door was replaced a few weeks ago, and they need to finish the interior framing where the interior door was removed. The staff is friendly, and many call mom by name, which is great. The Holiday Company needs to make it easier to log into the Wi-Fi – each and every time you are required to accept the user policy, and this added step just makes it more confusing for people who aren’t tech savvy, like my mom. So, overall, our experience is positive – there are a lot of plusses to the Holiday Retirement model, and I hope my mom is at the Cascadian for a long time.
