A Place for Mom has scored Arcadia Management with 9 out of 10 using our proprietary review score based on 80 reviews in the last 2 years. Over all time, Arcadia Management has 504 reviews with an average "overall experience" of 4.3 out of 5.
A resident was accepted after an initial review, but within a short time the community determined they weren't able to provide the right level of care. This created a stressful situation and the family had to quickly find a more suitable option.

Mom moved into Arbors East at Islandia memory care about year ago. DO NOT BELIEVE the sales, the advertising, and the promises from staff. When you check out the place, they will promise great, attentive, caring environment for your relative. In reality, the place is simply a roof over your head and a few meals a day. The care there leaves ALOT to be desired. Only about half of what Mom needs and was promised gets done on a daily and weekly basis. Staff do not communicate with each other. When raising concerns, we were even told that "we have too many residents to deal with, we don' have time for your concerns". The management at Islandia East is either inept or just simply don't care. A few of the individual caregivers are great, but some are terrible - cold, do not assist in dressing, even vaping in the rooms of resident. If the owner of the Arbors [name removed] would like to contact me, please do so and I am glad to share our concerns in attempt to help you improve operations.

ALL 0 - Mom spent 1 week there. She didn't get to see or do anything. There was one lady that came when Mom called, she was nice. Mom was extremely sick. Next day dr. came, she went back to hospital. They weren't at all pleasant when I informed them Mom not returning. They said they decide if she comes back NOT her dr. Who do they think they are. I removed her belongings.

This was HORRIBLE. Mom was taken to ER and no one contacted me ( her daughter and POA). I was only person on contact. Doctor Said she can't go back. Staff gave me hard time. Not all her medical supplies were given to me. Their billing was ABSOLUTELY crazy( they billed for days she wasn't there and Said she couldn't come in to 2nd of month yet billed from 21 of prior month). Took a long time to get some of what was owed back but not full amount. There management company were rude and showed NO compassion and tried to blame me). If I could give below 1 I would. Place was clean but not helpful or caring

Stay away. My loved one left early because of how bad it was. Medical care and attention was not good, especially for her as a patient with a condition that required more attention. Activities were terrible. I would give the food a negative rating if I could. I would not recommend The Arbors to anybody.

They over medicated my loved one. There was not enough caring or oversight from the staff. Overall it was not a good experience and we would not recommend The Arbors at Islandia to others looking.

My mother was supposed to go to this community but then she ended up injuring herself. In the end when she was reevaluated they told me that she could not come to the community. They were not able to tell me what the criteria was for why my mother could not come. I even asked when filling out the contract if I had time and I was told I had 30 days and then when it was something that they told me they could not take her for they only gave me a partial refund

We had one hurdle after another here. They wanted to bump his care level so that he would have to pay more, when that happened they said they would not take him back from the hospital unless he had more home health care. I would tell others you have to be an advocate for your loved ones and stay on top of things.

Based on our tour, I was not happy with them at all. During Covid, they allowed us to walk around inside (where other communities did not), and we saw people walking around without masks on. It felt uncomfortable. Also, the person we met with had her dog with her. I was just very unhappy with the whole situation.

We were displeased with the Arbors at Westbury. My brother was here and he passed away from COVID. We feel they dropped the ball at the end, he was suffering in his joint room. His roommate had COVID and they took his roommate to the hospital but not him, they left him there. We could not get in touch with my brother and they were not good with communication here. It seemed to me that they weren't very quick on diagnosing him. Overall, it was not a bad place except for they did not follow through.

This place doesn't even deserve a star. They deserve a lawsuit. You can see from other reviews apparent medical misconduct. Overmedicating, undermedicating, and neglecting patients is part of the daily routine. A google search could tell me more about the condition of the family member that I trusted in Arbors care more than a doctor at the Arbors could. Stay away from this place for your own wellbeing. All they want is your money. They got my money and all I got was a funeral. If you care for your loved one, look elsewhere, because they may not come home. PS- Check NYS Department of Health on this place and you can easily view their citations.

We were very dissatisfied and disappointed in The Arbors. There was a lack of attention and care to the residents. No follow up at all from the management about any inquiries once we were “sold” and registered. My mother had a serious fall which required hospitalizarion and there was no call to see how she was doing when she would return etc. We never brought her back there. We moved her to a much nicer and better facility. I do NOT recommend The Arbors under any circumstances. They are only interested in getting your money. They could be selling gym memberships for all the care and consideration they give. I regret that we did not see through them but this is an emotional process and you need to have an advocate with you.

My grandmother was a resident here for close to a year and in that time a lot of changes took place. There now seems to be a very high turnover rate due to the possible mistreatment of staff by higher level employees. My grandmother ultimately decided she no longer wanted to stay at this facility mainly because most, if not all the staff she was used to had left. A lot of the newer employees [removed], unfortunately lack the class and desire to successfully meet the expectations expected of an assisted living community such The Arbors. Overall a very disheartening experience.

We had a horrible experience with The Arbors at Hauppauge. We had signed the papers with them and were waiting to move our loved one in, but they found some detail in her medical history that they didn't like and told us she was no longer allowed to move in. We had the social worker at the hospital try and work with them to get some answers, but they told us we would have to contact their corporate office. They handled everything very unprofessionally.

For people that need the third floor, the memory care floor, it's horrible. It's clean, but they aren't very attentive to the residents, they just don't have enough staff. They know how to charge top dollar, but they go cheap. They find the cheap way out for everything, they have the cheapest t.v. package, the food was very cheap, and low scale. They had one choice of chicken, it was a chicken leg and a wing, with a little piece of corn on the cob, with no holders and anything. I don't know why they would give seniors with dentures chicken with little bones in it and corn on the cob. They didn't offer me anything not even a glass of water when I would have occasion to be there for a meal. The people have fights at mealtime, and that made it hard for my loved one to socialize. We know someone else that moved in there, and they even say it's horrible. It costs an amazing amount of money to move out. You want to be there when they evaluate your loved one, don't let them tell you that you can't be there. If your loved one can hold a conversation then the third floor is definitely not for them. They have a chairlift that was very scary and isn't always working. The facility looks nice, but when you enter you are on the first floor where everyone can walk and talk. When people go there, and they take a "security deposit" which isn't for damage it's so you will give them a thirty day notice. Don't tell them your income or bank balance up front. They will take advantage of your situation, if you have money they will take it.

We had a horrible experience at The Arbors. I felt that the staff were not culturally sensitive and were very bias. I felt that they were not skilled for dementia residents. They even told us that they were only looking for the "pleasantly confused". When my loved one was here he was back and forth from the hospital. I would never recommend them to anyone.

I am writing to describe the treatment my father received while staying at The Arbors West Assisted Living in Islandia, NY. I went out to Long Island to visit my father on a Wednesday, this past July. He had only been at The Arbors for a few days, and I wanted to check in on him. I knocked on the door to his room and no one answered. As I went to look for him elsewhere in the facility, the door to his room slowly opened, and I heard my father call to me. I turned, and could not believe the person standing in the doorway was my father. I saw a defeated looking shell of a person, who was doubled over, holding his side in pain, and looking at me with a vulnerability that left me speechless. I took his hand and went into his room. I asked my father what was wrong, and he said he had a severe pain in his lower right side in addition to lower back pain. He said that when he told the 'doctor' at the facility about the pain, he was told to start taking Tylenol on a regular basis. I brought my father into the dining hall as he told me that he had been unable to eat due to the pain. While at the table, an aide (?) came in with 2 pills in a small cup, and told my father that he needed to take them. As she walked away, I asked her what pills she was giving him. She glanced over her shoulder and said "Tylenol", and kept walking. I stood up, and told her that he needed some water in order to take the pills. She said "Oh, I don't have any water.", and again went to walk away. I then stood up, walked over to her and told her that she needed to get him some water so he can take his pills. She grudgingly left and came back with a small cup that was halfway filled with water, placed it on the table, and then again walked away without even waiting to see if he had any difficulty taking the pills. I then told my father that we were going to see whoever is in charge of basic care. I knocked on the door of the Wellness Center, and spoke with the woman in charge. I said "As you can see, my father is in severe pain, and has been like this for the last 2 days. I need someone to see him." In a bored, dismissive tone, I was told "I don't have time to see him, I am having someone discharged from the hospital." Struggling to control my anger and disbelief, I asked "Then what do you suggest I do?" She then said "I don't know. Maybe Urgent Care or an Emergency Room?" I then told my father to have seat in the office, and went outside to call my sister who lives in Virginia, and is a Registered Nurse. She told me to immediately take my father to the Emergency Room. I left The Arbors West at 2:00 in the afternoon and was in the Emergency Room until 2:00 am the next morning. The doctors told me that my father had a hernia. My father was then admitted to the hospital where he had to stay for over a week to address the issue. As with any elderly patient, my father had been dealing with “Transfer Trauma” when he arrived at The Arbors West. This trauma, the appalling apathy, lack of attention/empathy from the staff members, and the severe pain of a hernia are the reasons I had to see my strong, steady father looking utterly defeated, dejected, and terrified. This, I will never be able to forgive or forget. Can you imagine a 95 year old man in a new environment, scared, confused, dealing with the pain of a hernia, and getting absolutely no help or attention from the staff members? Needless to say, my father never want back. My siblings and I had already paid a substantial fee for a 1 month 'staycation' which is a term The Arbors West use for a 'trial' month to see if the resident and the family are comfortable with the facility. When we called and told them that my father would not be returning, they started with "Well, according to the contract...." We explained that the extenuating circumstances were enough to grant an exception and a refund was expected. After going back and forth, we were told that we would be getting a refund, but will be charged for every day that my father's belongings were in the room. My brother quickly cleared the room of his possessions that same day, and we waited for the refund check. When the check came, it was only for half of what we had paid for the month. We called and were told that it was probably an issue for the Accounting department, and they will look into it. As I write this, we are still awaiting the remaining funds. My father is now in an assisted living facility in Virginia. It has been about 2 weeks and his transformation to his old self has been remarkable. The care and attention from the staff members have made a huge difference, and he is progressing in leaps and bounds. I could not be more grateful or thankful for their efforts not only toward my father, but to all of the residents. They treat everyone like actual people, as opposed to faceless distractions that can be ignored due to the vulnerabilities that come with ageing; as was evidenced at The Arbors West. I am sickened and saddened by the indifference and neglect I witnessed at The Arbors West. My father, thankfully, has my sister and I completely invested in his well being, and we were able to remove him from such a degrading environment. My heart, however, breaks for the other residents who are not as fortunate. The Arbors West need to be held accountable for their actions. Their residents may not have the power to address this, but their loved ones certainly do. This will be the first of a series of steps I will be taking to make sure another person will not have to witness the atrocities, or experience the heartbreak that I did when visiting a loved one residing at The Arbors West.
