Not Great

When went there, from referral. She had given me several places and at that time was one of those situations and we had to find her a place and find it very fast as she was set to be released from the hospital with nowhere to go. The facility American House of Hendersonville is having many issues currently at the moment, no hot water in several areas especially the beauty shop. We are in the process of moving our loved one out of American House of Hendersonville but are on waiting list and it keeps getting longer. She's got bed sores continually on her for weeks at a time. When my husband arrived last week to visit and she wasn't there. The staff said they hadn't contacted you, they said was supposed to but had not. She had left facility on her own to go to doctor.

Tour experience

I toured with American House Murfreesboro and I did not care for the facility. It had an institutional, nursing-home feel to it and reminded me of a place that I had my mother in in my home town. When walking around, the residents here seemed to need a lot more care cognitively than my friend did. It was just not going to be a good fit.

non professional dementia care

I was told that my loved one needed long term care and my husband is a hand full. I needed full service dementia care. They had outdoor time and everything that my loved one needed at this community. My loved one was transferred here and everything was supposed to be taken care of. The community was sold a month before we came and changed into another community. When my loved one moved in I got some calls in the middle of the night and my loved one was having some issues and I went there to be with him until he calmed down. I also paid for private nursing that they told me was required. I got a call also from the community and they called the police on my loved one and the police refused to take him and stated that this was a dementia care matter and not something for the police. They stated that my loved one had flung one of them against the wall. The people were yelling at us, yelling at my loved one and threatening to quit. We talked to the director and discussed everything in regards to the police call. We have moved my loved one out and we are waiting on a refund from the community. When moving my loved one and they were helping us they came off very rude and unprofessional. In the day time my loved one had some great attendants but at night the care was lacking. Its not the worse place there was some very good times here but things happen also.

American House needs imrovement

They did not have enough help. They just simply cannot hire people right now. My loved one didn't get his medications properly, and even got other people's medications. So I took him out of the facility for those reasons. The facility itself and his room were lovely. The eating arrangements were not good, although the food seemed adequate. But as far as the care, they don't have enough help, including enough English speaking help, which seems to be a problem of our times.

They need consistency

Not sure where to start....my father has been a resident for almost 4 years. The rooms are small but equipped well. They do have several activities for residents and the gals at the front desk are amazing. That is where the good ends. They are in their 5th executive director and wellness director. Lack on consistent management effects the residents and their care. They are NOT quick to answer call buttons and medication passes make me cringe (I have observed numerous times). If there is a skilled technician they pull them out and "promote " them. Great for the few employees but awful for residents. New technicians come in and have no experience or just don't care. Almost impossible to get hold of management team to address issues (again) and when you do they are full of misinformation. AH needs to get their act together, stop constant turnover, and show they are really there for the residents and not just for their rent! Had high hopes for them and unfortunately they are one of the better places in the area.

SHAME ON AMERICAN HOUSE!

Unfortunately, corporate staff appear to be more concerned about generating revenue and ensuring occupancy than they are about the specific needs and safety of those residents requiring daily assistance and nursing care. My family member who had memory loss and physical mobility issues was granted residency at this facility. However, the environment was certainly not conducive for her physical and mental needs. Moreover, my elderly parent was subjected to an increased risk for injury and/or associated death due to a living environment not suitable or safe pursuant to her disabilities. The administrative representatives claimed that additional support services were available for purchase. However, these added expenses are costly for individuals with limited funds. Thus, I highly discourage placing a family member in this setting who is struggling with health related conditions including cognitive decline / memory loss, physical and mobility challenges, mental / emotional issues, and lack of independence. American House is an assisted living facility that provides social activities and planned meals for individuals that are still self-sufficient and in relatively stable health both physically and mentally. American House is not a nursing care facility, and therefore the staff should have the integrity to ensure that their facility is suitable and safe for the applicants specific needs prior to offering a residency contract. Shame on American House for placing more value on revenue and occupancy than on the well-being and safety of applicants. CONSUMERS BEWARE!

Things Are Not What They Appeared

On our tour things seemed like it was going to be a good fit for my dad. The staff was friendly very nice it was a clean community it is located on a big piece of property things seemed like it was going to work well. Now a few weeks later the level of care that I thought my father was going to be receiving what I was told not to worry about has me concerned I don't think they can handle what he needs. Prior to him becoming ill he had been eating and talking with the other residents. Facing the storm the management has already put in place emergency procedures and currently my dad is in the hospital> Sso once this emergency has passed then we will see what issues we can work through.

It's ok

My mom is here. It's ok but her bathroom never feels clean. I don't think they worry about the floors. Food is not wonderful and portions are small. They never really address this. They act as though they do many times. Higher ups in company don't seem to truly get involved to make sure things are going well. Mostly though, there's a lot of fluff on the activities calendar. If you're looking for a place for your mom, pay attention to their calendars. How often are they taken out? When you see entries, are they meaningful? For instance, if it says cards, is that an organized game or do some ladies just go play cards somewhere and it's added to the calendar to look good. My last beef is a corporate one....they obviously don't want you contacting higher ups in the company for comments. You can't get a number or be allowed to send a letter to the head of American House if you choose. You must speak with the director of your building. If they aren't doing a great job, there's no recourse. Oh yes...one more beef...my husband I get angry when we see the American house commercial where they're handing residents a menu in the dining room, etc. We really feel that they're misrepresenting American house as better than it is. Having said all that, it's an OK place for the money. If my mom had more money I would have her elsewhere where it's more professional & there was better food and activities.

Not sure my mom is going to be able to stay here!!!

There have been nothing but inconsistencies since mom moved into American house. There have been issues with the medical team that is contracted by the community. I have not been able to get any resolutions to my concerns. The communication has been terrible between the staff as well as with the family. I still have not heard anything in response to an email I sent last week. There have been numerous issues with the clicker they are given to call for assistance. There has also been mis communication with these as well.

There is a lot of turnover

This is near the villages, and they have expanded so much, there are over a hundred thousand people there. Not a lot of people live in the area that work here though, and there is a lot of turnover. It got to the point that people would complain to the manager, and he would just tell people, well then move. We did.

The Untold Story

Since the new owner has taken over and the trickle down has hit, I've been very disappointed. Staff is running out the door so fast the remaining staff is working double shifts and giving notice. Our family has been happy with the staff who work directly with mom. They no longer have an activity director. Staff is expected to care and provide activities for the senior residents. Promises made when mom was admitted are now being revoked. We were told staff could handle her and the various issues she had. Now we're told this is not a skilled facility. Staff is not trained in behavior issues many seniors suffer, communication is poor, and the administration lies about the services they can provide.

Not a great place

My parents have been there quite a while but we are looking to move them out. One elevator breaks down about once a month and the last time it took 3 weeks to fix it - which meant the residents had to walk a lot further. They do not have a back-up generator, and they lose power about 4-5 times a year, sometimes for a couple of days - this is scary when residents live on the second or third floor and have no elevator. The staff try hard, but cannot overcome these difficulties. The doctor only comes once a month and the Physician's Assistant is not equal to a doctor. Supposedly a Podiatrist or Chiropodist comes regularly, but every time we asked, we were unable to get an answer as to when, so we finally just went elsewhere for foot care. The place looks decent, but there is also a lot of traffic noise.

Mixed review

Our family member has been for about 2 years. We have mixed reviews about this facility. The grounds and public areas are very nice. In the Winter the heat does not work that well and the older building is is great need of repairs. Most of the staff is very friendly although I have herd many complaints of some medical staff being very pushy and stern with the residents. The food is O.K. The activities are good even though a new activities director is new and still learning. In general they seemed understaffed. We never see the head of facility or medical staff and when you do, there is never a smile on their face making you feel very uncomfortable. They are not very open to suggestions always stating "it's a corporate policy". Overall, this is a good value for the money as long as your loved one is somewhat independent. Good luck.

Things could be worse, but certainly could be made better.

We had some very bad experiences when we first moved my mom into American House. We spent a lot of time in the beginning there making sure things went right and she felt comfortable there. I highly suggest family does that to see what actually does go on in any facility they place a loved one. She adjusted quite well because we were there to make sure she got the best care and met other residents to get her adjusted to being there. Our main complaint is with the daily activities they say they provide. She's only been there a little over a year now and there's been at least 3 times when the activities director has been sick or on long term sick leave for weeks or months at a time. These residents thrive on having some activity to do to get them out of their rooms and we've been very disappointed with that and have complained many a time and feel we always get the verbal assurances. They are paying for those services. There has also been issues with the quality of the medical services provided. I know it's a thankless job to take care of our older generation and there is a high turnover of personnel there which is hard on the residents. We constantly have family members there, probably 5 - 6 times a week checking up on things. Overall my mom is happy there and that is the main concern, but overall our family was not expecting this quality of care for the price she's paying.

Like a Nursing Home

That was like a nursing home. I knew my mother wouldn't be comfortable with that. I didn't even bring up taking her to see that because a place that felt like a nursing home was the picture she already had in her head of what we were trying to do. I wanted a place that would be homey.

Our families experience

There are better facilities for the money. Maybe even tire commend the other American House facilities in Riverview or Taylor. The Medical Team at Southgate needs better management and probably over haul. Plenty of misses with the care. Food is honestly basic at best. The facility needs a face lift. Carpets are dirty/stained in the common areas
