Not A Rehab

I thought I was going to stay at a rehab to recover from an injury to my foot but I discovered this community is for assisted living. The staff is friendly and attentive, they brought my food to my room. During my stay I had a small problem, I was not brought my meal at times. I had a physical therapist help me and I was not too happy here and I would recommend this community if they need assisted living.

lobby looks nice, but the food, services, maintenance could be better

The independent living side appears nice, but the services are lacking. No one to acclimate your parent to anyone else. the cleaning isn't much. Clothes disappear from the laundry rooms. Staff is nice, when your parent actually has some medical issues, the angels people level of expertise is inconsistent. There is a lot of turnover. The front area has been grungy looking from all the time I've seen it, there is no real outdoor area except for where all the cars come and go with exhaust fumes. Don't consider the assisted living, as I a good place for care, as the staff there seem even worse. If your parent is a diabetic, don't expect any special menu choices from them. My mother's AC unit is not really working after I had them fix it twice.

Review for Overland Park Place

The professional staff was not great, they lied about transportation availability (the biggest reason I moved there) a major issue for me as I see a couple of physicians a week. The maintenance 'chief ' could not find his way his way out of a plastic bag. The activities were boring, the good ones run by other inmates. It was very pathetic. I rarely saw our ED. She stayed hidden away in her office. The business managers job seemed to be to protect the ED but he was usually wandering the halls and very polite. It was always stained. The smell of sewer was pervasive. All the lounge chairs shower have years of use and the activity room spend where we spend a lot of our free time was carpeted which got more or less wet from week to week but it was NEVER DRY. The place was looked gorgeous but look a little deeper and the viewer will find broken wc's and walkers hidden in the basement stairs, mold in some of the basement , frequently broken windows , and on and on.

It was just middle of the road. Not fantastic, not horrible. Very thankful we were there only 5 months.

We went there because of the director who had a great reputation. Weeks after we arrived she resigned. She then came back after 6 weeks. The lead RN who we liked also quit. The RN they hired was terrible. Not friendly and no interaction with residents or family. They were also remodeling, which was loud and dirty. It was just middle of the road. Not fantastic, not horrible. Very thankful we were there only 5 months. It was appropriate for what we needed and convenient.

Review for Brenden Gardens

I moved in less than two years ago and during that time Brenden Gardens has been on a constant downward spiral. Before I moved here, I'd been told by friends they'd heard how well the building was maintained and how delicious the food was. Every meal was "gourmet and nutritious." Fresh vegetables, fresh chicken, meat and fish for our main course, and delicious bread, rolls and desserts. What many of us have found are not very nutritious meals consisting of scoops of mashed potatoes with gravy and canned vegetables. The Chef outdid himself for the Holiday meals as well as keeping our daily menu interesting. Unfortunately, he resigned earlier this year when he was offered a job where he would have weekends off and no longer be required to work 12 hour days.

A new resident's experience

kitchen staff - 0 housekeeping staff - 4 don't have sufficient knowledge of other staff members to rate them Friendliness Staff - 2.5 Residents 4 (they look out for each other). Quality of care: this is hard to rate as it's an Independent Living Facility and care is very limited Administrative Staff: Some staff members are very friendly and helpful; others not so much, timing of maintenance repair/replacement is too slow-unacceptable, feeling is that staff is made the priority while residents are treated as secondary. All of the above results in overall rating of 2.5. Untrained cook staff, no direct supervision, rude staff, too small portions, many times food is inedible--- many times I leave the table still hungry. Could include other types of activities, for example, arts & crafts, cultural, current events. Activities include a lot of bingo and cards, both of which require little involvement on the part of the staff. My rating has been provided for each of you items, as well as my explanation of how I arrived at that rating for your consideration when evaluating this facility.

If you don't need a walker look farther.

I'm not sure the eating place is all that sanitary with the tables or placemats being used by several different people. Don't even walk pass the kitchen area!! The only staff member that has talked to me the month I've been here is the activity manager. He's trying very hard but very few if any show up for the activities. I was hoping for an active community!! The waitstaff are so busy they don't seem to like their job. I'm not too happy here. Maybe because I'm one of the few that can walk without a walker!!!!! Did I come here too early???

Not a very good experience, cleanliness just ok,very good, They didn't do any care, food was terrible, couldn't really get involved with activities, cost was not a value for us we couldn't use the facility like the swimming pool or exercise equipment because they didn't have a lift to get my wife in the pool or whirlpool bath because of no lift . Room for improvement...

With the overall experience and the cleanliness - It seems like I was constantly addressing problems. The monthly fee included cleaning her room. I think she went almost four months where they had a housekeeping person quit before they hired someone. Housekeeping in that time period was intermittent. Many times I did the cleaning and took out her garbage because no one came to do it. I complained but it seemed all complaints fell on deaf ears. Administrators were NOT friendly to me. I think they're learned early on that I was going to hold them accountable so they preferred not to be friendly. [name removed]person that took care of the monthly bills rarely got them right. I had to go through her bill carefully each month to make sure there were no errors. When my mom passed.....she was in hospice home. I called to let them know and the [name removed]answered the phone and said she was sorry to hear that. I never received a call from the director or any other person there.....except for her 2 nurses. I found that very unprofessional. It told me that they really do not care about their residents. I paid an extra [fee removed] a month for mom to have help dressing and bathing. RARELY did she get help dressing and after I complained enough she finally had help when bathing. Any time I questioned them about that I was told ..oh I didn't know she was supposed to have help with that. That was a [name removed] problem. That should have been in her chart to be done on a daily basis. In their defense mom may have refused that at times. I think meals were ok...they were better when she got there then when she left due to some changes they made. Mom would describe the activities as "boring". Again that may have just been her. I did not feel it was worth the value. Except for the two nurses that she occasionally needed the rest of the staff seemed to do as little as they could get away with.....that was how I saw it. That may be different for someone who needed a lot of care. Mom was very self sufficient. I did not like Five Star as you can gather. I expected much more than Mom got for the money we were paying. In all honesty I may have felt the same way no matter where she was.....I'm sure there's no perfect place for loved ones.

They switched the facility to memory care without telling us! I give this a horrid rating for not telling us and having my non-memory care mother finding out the hard way!!!!

Disappointed

Well water, not city water. They spray for ants in the resident rooms. Because there are ants in resident kitchens. Emergency pull chains are only located in the resident bathrooms. Only some rooms have a walk in shower, most have a very high step in tub. Windows were difficult to open in the resident rooms. Only basic cable is included. Very limited channels. Nighttime front desk staff was not pleasant. Small dogs and cats are allowed-the hallways often smelled of animal pee/poop. Residents did not clean up animal feces in the grassy outside areas. Not enough outside seating. Washer/dryer room has restricted hours of use for residents. Very inconvenient. Need newer/more machines. Difficult to access building after 7 pm. No staff at desk to answer the doorbell. Sign in/out sheet is out of date--and inconvenient. Staff delivered/administered medications to residents. No defibrillator on premise. Staff has keys to every room No cameras in hallways= no visibility of residents except call button if a resident falls or enters another residents room. And no staff accountability when entering a residents room. Emergency back up lights failed once they ran out of charge leaving residents in the dark. Candles and flashlights were used during outages. No handrails along the hallway walls. Food is carb heavy. Dining service is slow. Not enough kitchen/wait staff. Hot food was often cold and unappetizing. Breakfast was bland and worse than a cheap hotel chain. Offerings were often out of stock. Same items every day. Took away hot food service that was offered 2x a week. Snacks are offered daily. Mostly sugary sweet items. Lobby TV was too loud. Staff encouraged residents to leave area by 8pm Always chilly. 72 degrees year round. Busing service was great in the beginning. Then became by advance reservation only Not many outings Very few activities

Disappointed

The first few months the care was exceptional. Unfortunately, changes are taking place within the facility, and the care has decreased. Employees do their best, but it begins at the top! Looking for other alternatives for our loved one.

Terrible experience

Pushing the help call button and it's been over an hour and nobody has shown up. Nurse on duty was 45 minutes late with medication and returned 2 hours later to administer medication that was scheduled every 4 hours and kinda argued about the time. Ovesely she didn't have the ability to read instructions on the computer. We do not recommend this place.
