Avalon Memory Care

We picked this community, because of the name and longevity of the staff. I was not happy with the care there, I would not recommend them to a friend or family member. They just did not take very good care of my mom, she didn't feel safe there.

My dad which did not have Alzheimer's (which they knew) and they treated him as though he did and did not include him in his treatment decisions. When I moved him out of there after 3 months they "lost" his oxygen compressor machine. A large machine. I had to file a police report. Basically like most places I would say "always Advocate for your loved one." It did not work for him and his situation but it may be a fine place otherwise.

I think people should know that supervision is simply not what it should be here. Maybe they need to hire more people and the staff to client ratio isn't good. I actually found my dad on the floor one time when I went to visit him. He had at least three falls there and we were never notified by the staff. They did not even notify hospice when he had a fall. The communication was horrible, the supervision was horrible and my dad ultimately ended up in the hospital with a horrible foot infection and we moved him straight from there to a new facility.

My mother was unable to walk or speak very well, which affected the care she received. She was adamant to me that she didn't feel they handled her in a way that she was safe or well cared for. And based on what I observed myself, I agreed. With how dissatisfied she was, it was disappointing that they would not waive any of the fees we had paid (we were were only there for 30 days), and they told us they could not do so because we had worked with A Place for Mom, which should not have been a factor.

Avalon has gone very downhill. When I was there touring it just looked dirty and worn out. I also overheard a staff speaking poorly to one of the residents which concerned me. The guy who was showing me around was kind of strange. It was just not a good experience overall.

I truly wanted to love this place. The aides and nurses are very nice…. Nothing against them. It is sooo horribly understaffed. The hallways smell so bad of urine that I gag often. Residents often relieve themselves ( number 1 and 2) in the public spaces and it sits for awhile because understaffed. I have witnessed fights between men(blood drawn), residents with black eyes, and now told about residents who have had multiple broken legs. Not sure how that happens? Again, nice staff…. old faculty…. Bug problems, and I believe a general lack of oversight by everyone. We will move our loved one asap. Also have heard complaints of being underfed. I have heard this from multiple residents. Cannot wait to be out.

There was a scheduled appointment. The staff didn't know what was going on and I didn't feel welcomed.

I was less than impressed with this community. It seemed very dark and there were no activities going on. I also seen only two staff while I was there. The visiting options were also only in the residents room while visiting due to covid but I wanted to be able to go other places in the community with my loved one.

The gentleman we talked to was very nice. I believe he was one of the owners. Initially we were very impressed. But when he started to walk us through the residential areas, instead of showing us an unoccupied room, he tapped on a resident's door and just opened it. He didn’t wait for a reply or anything. I understand he’s an owner employee and had the freedom to do so, but it made me uncomfortable. He encouraged us to go ahead and have a look in the room. There were two ladies in the room, and this was their home. They might not have been aware of what was going on, but they were in their nightgowns in bed, and it just seemed totally inappropriate. No one else on any of our other tours showed us an occupied room. As soon as that happened, I had seen enough. I didn't want people walking in on our loved one like that.

I give them 2 stars for cleanliness. We were fortunate to live close by so we could stop in at all hours. One Friday we stopped in and my 95 year old father was being fed hot dogs - with something on the side that looked like chili. Wow! Soon after he fell, and we removed him to a location where he was supervised better. [name removed]

My experience with the facility wasn’t that great. The whole place is just beautiful and gorgeous. I was tickled to [Removed] that my stepfather was going to stay here. It’s a very small house with a tightknit community. Everything was just so excellent. The kitchen was all open so everyone can see the chefs cooking. They had a small courtyard to go out and walk on. There were tables, chairs, big screen TVs, and couched in the main room to socialize. It’s a brand new building with pretty art and décor. But I was devastated when it came time to move him in. Two days before moving in, a nurse came to the hospital and assessed him and gave us the go ahead. When we arrived, she came in again to assess him and check his blood pressure. She immediately said that we need to take him back to the hospital and that he couldn’t stay at this facility. When we got to the hospital, the emergency room doctors said his blood pressure was of no concern. We called the nurse and she beat around the bush and said she decided that the facility wouldn’t be able to care for him. I guess he was more incapacitated than they thought. A few days later they tried to get my mom to sign papers for who knows what. He was only there for a few minutes! I was just shocked about this whole thing. They should really be more careful in assessing their residents beforehand. The facility says they are a dementia and Alzheimer’s care facility but I guess it’s to a certain point. It’s more of an independent assisted living facility in my eyes. Based off of my experience, I would not recommend this facility.

I didn't really care for my tour of this community. The staff was very kind, and friendly. However during my tour I could that this was not the facility for my mother, and her needs. I did find other community that suited our needs better.

We toured this community while looking into care options for a loved one, and our tour was not a good experience. The salesman that gave us the tour was rude and pushy, and gave me a very used-car-salesman vibe. He also was not very respectful towards the residents, he talked about them right in front of them, and told me not to worry because "They can't understand me anyway!"

I never saw the facility but spoke with a few of the owners. We were considering them, but in the end it turned out not to be the best decision for us financially. When speaking with the owner, I got a feel that his primary interest was not that of the care of the residents, but in filling rooms. There was one lady (who was their booking agent) whom we interacted with that honestly needs to get into a different field.

My mother does not have memory care issues, and they assured me that there were others there as well that did not have memory care issues, that that was just the name of the place but that they had other such residents that she could interact with. That was not the case at all. The care services for my mom did not go good at all. My mom was supposed to be cleaned when she was not and had urine soaked sheets to sleep with, etc. The people there seem friendly and it is a very nice facility, but the quality of the care and the fact that we were misled on what to expect made it a very negative experience. I could not recommend Avalon Memory Care.

I wouldn't even consider it. They had people sitting around in the lobby in their night clothes, in wheelchairs and it was just not good. There was an odor to it and it was depressing so I would not even consider it. I didn't get past the lobby.

The residents here were all in one big room, they were not separated. My loved one was much higher functioning and they only provided activities for one level of memory care, she went downhill quickly here so we moved her out.

Rude, unfriendly and bullying from the director.

It is a dangerous place! Employees some horrible, food ridiculous and filthy facility, they have no housekeeping. I know how bad it is now that I'm in a wonderful place. They need to be shut down. Send survey to my friends and family they'll tell you! I could tell stories that would shock you. But my husband is now in a great wonderful place! I wish no harm to anyone but it's not a good environment for the residents!

My mother was at this facility from [date removed] through mid-[date removed] The level of care, cleanliness and overall compassion severely declined. Mom would often be in soiled diapers at noon, still in bed when I would come visit. Her wet sheets from the night before would often be covered up with a blanket and remain soiled, causing a stench in the room. Gnats would fly around her trash can in the bathroom. Feces would remain on the floor in the shower for up to a week! This is not an exaggeration and I am SOOO happy I moved her. She is now getting the love and care she needs and my stomach hurts to even think about her still being at Avalon McKinney Ranch. When we left, a new director was taking over. Said she would turn it around. From what I hear, she’s no longer there. This place went downhill in a very bad way the last year we were there. The staff would even smoke weed in the office and bring their children to work. Praise God we got OUT. Skip this place and KEEP LOOKING!
